From what I can see of your chain it looks pretty dry and not 'over oiled'. If your chain is too tight maybe it caused the seal behind the sprocket to leak. Shouldn't be too hard to replace the seal, but check your chain tension.

Both of my Hinckley twins had that symptom just after a service. Clean the area and keep an eye on it. I agree, the chain doesn't look over-oiled; but that looks very much like oil 'leaking' from the sprocket cover rather than anything serious.

Hi - new to the thread - recently picked up a tidy 06 (blue and white) and after removing the seat I noticed that there is a signature "C L Smith" (or similar) hand painted on the base of the tank - it is painted in gold the same as the pin stripes on the sides of the tank - I'm guessing it was done by the paint guy at the factory - quiet a cool touch - has anyone else come across this ? - will try to attach a pic
Am enjoying the tread and have learned a great deal about scramblers

Any information on the wide tyre conversion or the mag wheels? Haven't seen that done before.
Would it make the scram feel too "floaty"?

yeah since the pin stripe is 'hand painted' then the painter initials it.

At least your one makes sense, my one was done by a guy call Nail! the picture in my mind is pretty crazy....

Nail: "Nail hungry. Nail finish blue bike..."
Supervisor: "good job Nail. you can go to lunch now....err leave the fuel tank please!"

    :rofl

Thanks gk ryder - was this only done on the early UK manufactured bikes ?
And where ever you are CA SMITH, you did a nice job painting the tank

Thanks for all your replies. The chain lubrication is w/out suspicion - I´ve got Scottoiler. But my guess would be some dirt under the sprocket seal because I use the bike quiet often off-road. In that case a thin needle could save the game ...

I have a Scottoiler on both Scrambler and Tiger1050 and are certainly the cause of lube leaking out from behind the front sprocket cover(s). Hot weather causes a bit more lube than anticipated being be fed to the chain but I can't be arsed adjusting it (we don't get that much hot weather!)

I watched a recent documentary about the making of the 2010/2011 Thunderbird where they show a guy in the factory handpainting the "coach line" as they called it. Then he signed the tank in the same area as in your pic . They said he's been pinstriping tanks for over 30 years! The CEO said they still handpaint the lines is to show their attention to detail and pride the builders have in their workmanship.

If you are Auckland based you could have a look at mine, it's mounted in behind the mufflers so it is unobtrusive but a bit fiddly to refill.

I visited the factory a few years ago and we found CR Smith who had signed the tank on our 2006 Bonnie. This the man in action...

I think you are right. Same issue my Thruxton. The gasket has been worn out for my chain has been too tight. Piece of cake to repair. If you 've got the skills, you can do it on your own. (I had it repaired at my local Honda dealer ;) ). You don't loose a lot of oil there. Looks worse than it is.

I have the Mas cs cover which leaves the sprocket mostly exposed.
Chain goo drips down to the frame and looks unsightly.
Chain lube does not clean off easily.
Without the stock cs cover you really notice it.
A thought when you think to change covers.
