speaking of 4 more riders....these four from down under arrived in Saigon 3 days after my departure,,,and had a helluva good adventure,,well recorded and in the latter posts ,,ol Steve posts some fun video footage with great maps for ye who might attempt something similar..[i'm already scheming

I live in South Texas so we get a lot of Winter Texans some of which end up moving down permanently. I know several that are up in age that continue to ride. One in particular reminds me of you, experimental airplane enthusiast, in his mid eighties and still puts in serious miles on multi state rides.

As a youngster of 68 years I admire what you are doing. I still ride, only not as much as you do, or that I want to. You are also one great story teller, and the reading is easy and entertaining.

I'm 65 and in totally!

20 years ago i had a bad lower back injury and a TENS unit was prescribed.
It works for me but i don't need it often.
The big plus is no side-effects from pain medication.

I took today off. Drove a friend in my Smart car 510 miles round trip to pick up his new Jetski. Towing a trailer 2 feet wider and 10 feet longer than my car up and over the Cascade Mountains was a different kind of Adventure. It is late so will hit the M/C story tomorrow.

What I find most encouraging about this whole forum thing is/are the similarities we all share. I got myself hurt way back when - I told a 19 year old jerk with a baseball bat he had been using to hit his Father - that - He was under arrest. He said, "No I'm not." Eventually we went to the Hospital and then to prison for him. I was Medically retired. After 26 "Specialists" were unable to fix me (They all wanted to drill exploratory holes in my body. I said, "No.") I attended a "Pain Management Course". At the first meeting we all wrote down on a 3x5 card our personal problem. Then we each in turn read them out loud. THEN the moderator/manipulator asked us to exchange our card with any one else that we chose to do. We all kept our own cards. We knew all the demons lurking in our problem area, but not others. We studied and used the TENS Units, Bio-feedback, Self Hypnosis, Drugs, Massage . . .. everything the Medical profession had to offer. What worked for some , did not work for others. Self Hypnosis and a smattering of Medication/drugs got me up and going. Some poor folks in our group of about 25 never found anything that helped.

Now, it is 20 some odd years later. The cause of the pain and the later back compressions are working together to try and stop me. I discovered long ago - that when I had a really bad day in Elementary School, High School, the Military, Law Enforcement - that if I went for a motorcycle ride - whether it was 20 miles or 8,084, my problems were no longer the central focus of my life. The wind whistling through my ears apparently dislodges some of the short circuits hidden within my skull. Some problems lessen. I stop and someone always asks, "Where ya' from and where ya' Goin'?" By the time I get through my list of where I been and start on the "Bucket" list. . .. The aches and pains have been relegated to the back burners of my mind. I am at the point in my life that , "Whatever works for me - is Great!" Whatever works for you is Outstanding! Do it! There has been a video ad on T.V. It shows a blind man with his white cane checking out motorcycles inside a dealership. . . . we next see him astride a bike - wind in hair - bugs on teeth - rolling down a Highway - the camera backs away and we see the motorcycle is on a trailer being towed by his Significant Other. His dream is fulfilled. My eyes leak everytime I see it. He has everything each of us are still seeking. Wow! I envy a blind man. John

Sign me up . I'm 70 yo sat and still riding dirt on my lc4 and road on my Ducati ( although not as fast as I think I was ). It's all in yer head . Good luck on yer trip , maybe we'll meet on the road some day

i'm 68 years young and just finished 12k miles to deadhorse and the dempster..third trip to ak and beyoundddd. Pain is when you are not on a road trip...please continue adventure!!!

I'm a mere child of 64. In ten days I'm heading out on a 2000 mile trip. I just really hope it doesn't rain. I hate riding in the rain. All you guys just keep riding safe.

I left the Rest Park and rode the approximately 30 miles to Prince George. I stopped at the very first Motel I came to. It said, "Sandman" on the marque. A Denny's restaurant was next door. I got a ground floor room with bike parking less than ten feet from the door. I pulled off the gear that wasn't locked to the bike and dumped it on the room's floor. I got a bucket of ice. I pulled off my sweat soaked clothes, did a cool water rinse and became an anchor on the bed. The T.V. featured the Olympics - first that I had seen. I finally looked around the room - very nice - probably shoud have asked for the room rate. It looked Spendy. I could have cared less at the moment. I sipped liquids, chewed through the entire bucket of ice and began to feel human again.
I think I have at least one of these O.M.G. days on each of my trips. This one surprised me with its intensity. I remember standing beside the road in Dawson Creek last year, covered in mud, fearing that I would be killed in the horrible weather conditions. The weather on this trip has been a bigger factor than I realized. I thought I was compensating enough for the high temperatures by drinking everything in sight, but today proved me wrong. It was time to re-focus. The weather forecast is for cooler weather as I go north. ( Duh ) A cold front should roll through tomorrow. It will be welcome. I have the right equipment to deal with the cold - - hot, not so much. I poured water on my clothes as I rode and ran out of water. It really evaporates fast in the conditions I hit.
I met a young man (20ish) on a Vstrom this morning. He was on his way south after making it to Prudhoe Bay and going swimming in the Arctic Ocean. He keeps his cycle in Kentucky and lives/works in New York City. He said it is too dangerous to ride there. He confirmed a couple of Alaskan contacts that I had gleaned from the Internet, i.e. ADV. He looked my bike over and said the "Dalton" would be impossible with my street tires and how heavily I was loaded. I thanked him for the info and we each wished the other luck and saluted. Another sidenote: The Ride Reports on ADV and HU (Horizons Unlimited) are really special. The story lines all are about our sport - but expose us to many facets that we probably would have never considered. Some like Crashmaster's - No Fumar Espanole - two year tour left me checking my Passport expiration date. It is so nice to be able to share. Some of you have written and said I am courageous . . . sorry, courage is not what drives me. FEAR drives me. FEAR that I might not be able to do tomorrow, what is only difficult today. I promise only this - There will not be anymore crisis like today's. John & yeah - staying safe.
