Can a Strom make it on this route? What about a ninja 1000 with a B rider? I've been on it on 610 but honestly can't remember how rough it was. My recollection is no problem but wanted to check

I think you are out of your mind. Those bikes will not be able to get to the Alpine Tunnel. High elevation route with lots of rocks.

The road from the Pitkin side is mostly a car road. Was once a railroad grade, so level and fairly hardpack. There are some imbedded rocks, but nothing the family sedan can't do with a little care. Going over Hancock is another story. I would not hesitate to take my Wee up from the Pitkin side. From the St Elmo side is not really doable on a Strom, although some have.

I remember the road to Alpine Tunnel being in pretty good shape. It's just the old railroad grade converted to a Jeep trail. The Ninja may have some difficulty. A Strom shouldn't have any problems.

thanks for confirming that a - I am out of my mind, b- and the road is smooth.

I was in the Tunnel area twice, once successfully to the tunnel via St Elmos and Hancock on the 610, and tried once from Pitkin on a family four wheeler expedition that was foiled by a lightening storm.

Very cool trail / road to the west portal, all built stone by stone.

We did Alpine Tunnel from the Pitkin side last year. There are a few spots with babyheads, but nothing too bad. However, I got two flat tires within a mile, so be sure to take a plug kit and inflator with you. Lots of old nails and spikes from mining days.
