While parking in the lot of a large SoCal bike and accessory shop, I caught my pant leg on my right foot peg. Before I could get my leg all the way down, I dropped my bike. Only one person was in the parking lot to see me, and he came to check on me. I came less than an inch from knocking over the bike next to me, and then, like dominoes, the other 15 or so bikes parked neatly in a row would have fallen. I shut off my bike and picked it up. After I was on the center stand and had my gear removed, the members of a local MC filed out of the shop, mounted the same row of neatly parked bikes and roared off.
A riding bud asked me why before every stop I stick both legs out a certain way. I had a pants leg catch once on my armored riding pants, I got it unstuck in time as the velcro released, , but I modified my riding habits to prevent a reoccurance. I would rather have my pants in my boot, but my calves preclude that. So take this as a lesson, make necessary changes so it does not happen again. Ride safe, and have fun. Rod
Way back when I was younger I was riding my GS550 in sneakers I caught a shoe lace on the shifter while coming to a stop and......I feel your pain
.....Caught my left pant leg on my carburetor ( BMW Twin ) when stopping for a red light........the stupidest bike drop I ever performed. Didn't get hurt but those kids on the corner laughed so hard.......this happened long before Velcro, so it was duct tape wrapping my pants for many years. Talk about strange looks. I don't care. Now my velcro strips are always in ready supply......I wrap my laces first, then do the pant legs.
Hell....I'm 57 and nearly dropped mine last month...new boots and long laces conspired on me! Just caught enough in the gear lever...should know better. Now for new boots: I either wrap once around the upper boot and tie OR cut to proper length...but no droopy excess.
First time I ever got pulled over on a motorcycle, I proceeded to do the same thing. The cop was a bike cop (R1200RT) and he was nice and helped me pick it up. "can't say I haven't done that before myself" Then he rode off laughing a bit in his helmet.
I put my foot down on an unnoticed oil spot in a parking lot and found the ground in slow motion. Poop occurs. Glad you're alright.
I love this thread. I relate , I am short and always ride bikes way too tall. I have had a few zero speed drops. Last week I was riding with guys I had just met, First in line ,and only one with a kick stand, I stop to get off to open gate, stop right on a hump, cant touch, down she goes , I dont even look back, open gate and show them through. They were all thinking , man this guy know he has a side stand ? No wonder his bike looks like shit. Last year, colorado 500 , about 10 guys back tracking to catch up with their buddies (buddies told me be careful there would be on coming. I pull off the single track: bikes leans to low side- there I am sprawled out in front of them blocking the trail. Talk about looks as they rode by . I just .
I had that happen once but was lucky enough to snap the lace before losing my balance. Adrenaline and luck to the rescue. The lace wasn't even old or worn.
You're supposed to jump quickly to your feet, brush yourself off and announce to the onlookers "I meant to do that", ala Peewee.
Put my foot down in a sand patch in Burger King parking lot and slipped, dumping my GPz in 1987 and my buddy still gives me shit about it.
Boot lace caught on my old Sporty. Nothing like the panic you feel as you realize your stuck and going down.:eek1 I came unstuck before I hit the deck, but it was close!! Talk about feeling stoopid...
Brand new CBR600R, I mean, just bought it new. Dropped it pulling out of the dealers parking lot. Back tire slipped on some gravel and down I go. Felt like such a newb at the time.
Same here, CB750, fell over at a red light. Just as I hit the ground the light turned green. Then stepped on a palm frond at a red light in Del Rio on a GL1800, didnt go down but I blew both nuts thru the bottom of my pants keeping it up.
