Holland to Mongolia; 18.000km, 15 countries, one '62 Vespa, one car.

Next year in the beginning of May I will drive to Mongolia on my '62 Vespa GS. Another team will do the same trip by car. The route looks as follows (we won't drive through Iran, google maps doesn't understand ferries):



For this trip I will prepare a Vespa GS160. The scooter will stay as original as possible and will be equiped with some original crash bars and a front and rear luggage rack. I will mount a P200 engine with the carter protection of a T5. Also a glovebox of a PX will be fitted.

Last week I started stripping the GS.

In the upcoming weeks the GS will be powdercoated and I will start working on the engine and front fork.

Is this the Mongo lRally or the Mongol Charity Rally?

If it isn`t I would check out their sites if I were you as this is the same route they follow. There are lots of books written about the rally which may help you.

Thanks for your response! No this is not the Mongol Rally, we are doing this on our own initiative. I have already spoken to some people and I will speak to a guy who has done the same route last summer. However if people have good tips or comments, please tell.

The fuel tank is small. Have you thought of installing an additional tank?. Do not forget to bring 2t oil, not find good quality on the road.

Thanks for your reply! Yes I have thought about it. I will enlarge the original tank, in this way I will have at least 9.5 liter of fuel. They are sold as well. But I am still thinking about it. On the other hand, I could also bring one or two (5l) jerrycans with me. That will give me 14,5-19.5 liter of fuel which will give me a range of approximately 300-400 kilometers. I know about the oil, I am thinking about sending oil and tyres to a hotel or adress in for instance oezbekistan.

I traveled from the UK to as far as Gallipoli in Turkey last year on a Guzzi with 18" wheels. Once I got east of the old Nato line road maintenance was sketchy to say the least. There were pot holes and wheel ruts that would swallow a scooter.

Romania is a name that must mean "so many trucks.":eek1

@Morizzi, of course I will have to watch out for potholes, I will probably have to decrease my speed drastically on such roads. Still, indeed, bad roads will probably be my worst enemy, I will protect my engine for rocks and stuff and I will make sure that I can renovate my shocks on the way... Btw, an advantage of the Vespa is that it has a small wheelbase and it was built/designed in a time that roads weren't as smooth as they are nowadays.

It has been a while that I posted an update but do not worry, we are still busy with the preparations. Our route has been planned in detail and we are now busy with a travel agency to sort out some visa. In the meanwhile I am also working on my vespa and at the moment it looks like this:

Ow and by the way, happy and adventurous new year everyone! As a littel new years gift, here is an adventure picture of the old days. It shows Roberto Patrignani who drove his Vespa from Milan to Tokyo in 1964 on the occasion of the Olympic Games.
