Compliment or insult?

One of my coworkers noticed the riding gear in my office on Friday and said "oh I didn't know you rode! What kind of bike do you have?"

I told her I ride an older Yamaha and she laughed and replied, "huh, I always figured you were the BMW type."

I'd consider that a compliment.

Definitely a compliment! The only thing that bothers me here is that you had to ask? :huh

Actually twice this Summer, I've pulled up next to BMW cars while riding my K75 and said: "Wow, I didn't know BMW made cars too"....Always gets a laugh from the driver.

Definitely a compliment, but one you're not living up to... Of course it could also be poor judgment on your coworker's side. ;-)

Ask her. Not if it's a compliment, but why she said what she did. You might be in for a nice surprise.

Compliment or flattery - she figures you for a man with man. If she keeps talking to you, you're in like Flynn. If not, well, ces't la vie.

When BMW car owners say to me they did not know BMW made motorcycles I say something to the effect of , "isn't that interesting, I didn't know they made cars!"

You know that makes you look stupid right? Either that, or just plain rude.

She thinks you have an excessive supply of disposable income and have "final drive" issues.

There is an opening there if you want it.

I'm just surprised she knows that BMW makes bikes, and that there's a image in her head of what a BMW rider is. Now whether that image is negative or positive, who knows? Ask.
