I now have sufficient miles (6k) on the "new to me" bike (01 1150GS) to have figured out what I need to make it "mine". The primary issue is with the stock pegs. I am 6'2" and the more leg room I can get the better. The question is, get the Fastway F-6 pegs that in theory mount 1" lower (would do it for me) or get the Pivot Pegs. Can anyone comment on if/or how much the Pivot Pegs lower the peg height?
35" inseam and running pivot pegs on an '08 1200 GS. In standard configuration they are about the same as the OEM pegs without the rubber inserts which fits me. Documentation indicates they can be adjusted a little lower if desired. One thing to bear in mind with lower pegs is the relation to the brake and shifter. My pegs are about level with the controls which means that when I "pivot" forward there is a chance of inadvertantly contacting the pedals. Shifter can be adjusted lower fairly easily but not so for the brake. Only thing I would opt to change on the pivot pegs would be to design them longer so that I could more easily keep my feet outboard of the controls.
I'm 6'2 with a 35.5 inseam. I got the fastways and really like 'em. I also put a couple washers under the mounting points for the seat hardware to give me a few extra MM's Its rather good. Edit: its an 06 1150GS ADV
Same here, and I put the Fastways on in the low position when I had my '06GS, and they worked great, much better than the OEM pegs with the rubber inserts (even with the inserts removed). I've never used the Pivot Pegs, but sat on a bike that had them, and they seemed like they'd be pretty comfortable, especially standing and working the foot controls. But by then I'd already invested in the Fastways and was happy enough with those. Now on the '08GSA I just use the wider OEM pegs that came with the bike, worked fine for my US coast-to-coast (-to-coast) in '08.
That is some good information! I was wondering about the swivel pegs; the relationship to the brake and so on. Fastway it is! Between the lowering of around 1" and 1/4 nylon shims under the front seat mounting I should gain around 1.5" which will make it easier to stand on the pegs without having to redo the handlebars and all that intails - I have a lot of electrical plumbing to contend with.
check the roc stompers out, they are almost too pretty to use and yeah the work great too: Guy out of Asia somewhere selling them in vendors, some $$ but should be the last you ever buy so well spent imo
+1 on the Pivot pegs. You can run them lower like Fastways (I've also used & liked) just swap the springs right for left. I had em' on my 1150 and now on my 12 and though they are not as "nuke proof looking"as Roc Stopmers they are stout and work great sitting and standing. YMMV mmmm "stout" :slurp
+2 on Pivot Pegz. I have size 14 foot- stock GSA pegs make it hard to get my foot under the shift lever. The Pivot pivots and makes it easy. Also, they are always inline with my feet- not my feet with them.
Make that a +3. I sold my Fastways to buy the Pivots Pegz. I wear size 15 boots and the Pivots make a huge difference in comfort and ease of shifting. I also have a 38" inseam and the lower peg height is nice for a little extra room.
I prefer the Fastways on the big bikes and love my pivot pegs on the thumpers. But I'm gonna take the pivot pegs off my HP2 and go with some modded, extra long/wide fastways on the HP2 like I did the Adventure. The bigger bikes don't change attitude and pitch as drastically as the thumpers do which takes alot of the benefit out of the pivot pegs and you do have more surface area to stand on with the fastways.
