My truck broke down and I'm stuck in buena vista for a few days. I have my xr650r with me. Im not familiar with the area. Any must-do trails? Yesterday evening I did some of the 4 mile trail system east of town. Nice but not spectacular. Thanks,
Other "close" rides that don't require going all the way to Taylor Park are Mt. Princeton, Ptarmigan Lake out FR344, and the Tincup/Hancock loop. The main singletrack that's close is 4-Mile. You pretty much have to go over to Taylor to get a good bit of singletrack. Taylor isn't all that far over Cottonwood Pass, but it does add some mileage to the day for sure.
Well if your going to be held up for a few, BV would be on the top of my list. Go over to Four Mile just outside of town and run some of that stuff. All sorts of trails. Some single track, quad trails and some flowing Jeep trails. Looke for Chinaman Loop - run that both ways . You can also do Cottonwood Pass. A few miles on the back side (20 miles from town) will lead you to Timberline Trail - some kick ass single track. Keep going and I think it will lead to Taylor Park? I'd rather be stuck there than work ha. Good luck. Don't forget Eddieline Brew Pub mmmmmmmmmm.
The COBDR goes right through Buena Vista, it's one of the overnight stops between sections, you can download tracks from their website http://www.backcountrydiscoveryroutes.com/COBDR we just did it last week, it's a lot of fun, you could follow their tracks in and out in either direction.
mt princeton (take a sleeping bag and some food and camp in the cabin) mt antero (14,200) rainbow trail st elmo chinamans there is a metric shitton of riding to do in the BV area.
Thanks for the tips. I did head out to Taylor Park and did Tin Cup, Hancock and Tomichi passes, then backtracked to St. Elmo and out. I'll will check out the other suggestions.
Cottonwood Pass, Taylor Pass, Independence Pass. And /or Mosquitoe Pass and Hagerman Pass. Rainbow Trail on the south side of Salida. Go back to Pitkin and go over Black Sage Pass to Sargents to Marshall Pass. Lots of singletrack in that area too.
Hey all, a bunch of us from the Midwest (WI and MO) are headed out to ride the COBDR later this summer. We'll have a wide variety of skills and mostly riding 650's and 400's. We won't have time to ride the whole thing, so we are looking for advice on which section(s) to ride. Since this will be our first attempt, easier and wide would be a good start. We can either tent camp or CC camp. Probably looking for a place park the trucks and head out in a single group. After looking at the maps, I was wondering if Ouray would be good place to make a base camp and do one or two day rides in different directions and/or around the loop? Any suggestions for dates, based on weather, trail traffic, animal activity, town festivals, etc? Cheers BKWags
Do some of the trails on four-mile north. If you don't like those I'm not sure what to recommend you.
