So most of you know I picked up an '04 Sherco 2.9 this past June. I haven't done anything with it since, but with the upcoming fall STRA season & the FTR season, I thought it time to get to work on getting it squared away. Clean as it was, I figured all it needed was an oil change. I was wrong. In prepping it for this evenings oil change, I started it & got it up to temp. Then ran it up the street till the stuck clutch released. Didn't take but a couple passes. Then I got everything sorted & went on with the drain. What came out was a bit of a surprise. I expected better. This is what went back in. So before I take it out to the trails & sections, I'm doing a full service on it, which will be documented here. Last thing any of us needs is to buy a pretty bike that's waiting to lock up due to neglect. More to follow.
Not the end of the world. At least it had oil. Could of been just 100cc. I can not remember when a trials bike lower locked up on just oil. Only lower end I`ve had fail was on a brand new Yamaha on it`s first 100 yards.
I know. When I pulled the plug & it started to drain, it was so slow I thought I'd be good to get 200cc. Eventually I ended up with close to the required 450cc. Ugly, but at least it was topped up. Although full of condensation is not topped up to brag about. Didn't show in the pic, but there was plenty of H20 in the drained oil.
Its also a very good idea to strip the swinging arm and suspension linkage, replace any worn parts, and rebuild with good quality grease. If you dont already have one, its also a good idea to drill and tap the headstock, so you can fit a grease nipple, which will allow you to grease the bearings, without taking anything apart.
Changed the coolant & fork oil today. Coolant looked new, fork oil not so much. Wasn't much of it, either. Glad I got it out of there. Front wheel bearings are good to go. Tomorrow is carb cleaning & linkage maintenance.
Being Sunday & I'm tired of sweating my ass off in a hunert degree garage, I took today off & watched NASCAR & took a nap. More tomorrow night.
I forgot to mention that I pulled the carb before quiting for the evening yesterday. A bit of grunge, wouldn't you say? Who knows, it might run better after a good cleaning.
That is BAD, never ever should carb have ANY let alone that much dirt getting to it! fix whatever the reason of WHY the dirt present! did you say aircleaner boot problem in another thread? if you find something like that, that is letting dirt past filter, that is A SERIOUS issue. Dirt and crap in engine, means BAD things.
Actually you might just be lucky. That dirt looks new and the slide has no deep marks. Good thing you took the time to check it out!
No work last night or until closer to the weekend. Went out to the garage last evening & looked at the thermometer on the wall. It was sitting dead on 100. Went back in the house. It's supposed to cool of a bit Thu, we'll see. I hope so, I hate having a bike apart for more than a couple of days.
Hello Huz... Did you get through the starting procedure ok? Looks like the last guy neglected the airbox seal, Also that oil, looks like typical after a weekend of tooling around, Glad you checked it on the way out Hope all goes well, let me know if there is anything I can help with Ron
No progress on the Sherco this week, nor probably the next, either. I went down hard Wed on the GSA. Low speed crash in a restaurant parking lot. Just me, no one else involved. Badly twisted left ankle (afaik) & a couple of bruised ribs. I put myself in a boot & on crutches for now, but will probably see a doc in the next few days . Went back to the scene today & found that I ran across their badly designed drain system, which includes runoff from their fryer oil dump station. Yes, I'm seeking counsel. I don't want to own the place, I just want me & it fixed so someone else doesn't get hurt worse than I. I'll resume work on the Sherco as soon as I can walk without too much pain.
Went to the doc yesterday. Two torn ligaments in the ankle & a couple of broken ribs. Can someone clean my carb & put the bike back together? Please?
