My wife n I are heading out to Westcliffe Co. in a couple days. Thinkin' bout droppin down to Rt.96 in Kansas somewhere.Is that pretty scenic and do the speeds drop significantly?[EXELLENT PICS] by the way! Luv learning about the old wagon trails and the railroads,thanks

We currently live in New Mexico but my wife and I grew up in Kansas. I'm from around KCK and my wife from Iola. I always tell people how beautiful Kansas is but no one believes it until they see it.

When ever we go back we always take the smaller highways and avoid I-70.

Just last week, I was doing the Santa Fe Trail thing:

Ridin' the "Ruts" at Lost Springs, KS

Then, on to Old Fort Larned

I side tracked off the Trail cuz I wanted to see the Castle Rocks & Monument Rock. Thunderstorms the previous night left the road quite deceptive: dry sand covering silting mud. I managed to tour a little of the Smokey Hills River area:

I continued west and found the "ruins" of the only Pueblo in Kansas. Occupied shortly after the Spanish incursion into the New Mexican region, a group of Pueblo Natives sought refuge on the Plains around 1600.

The highlight of my trip occurred at sunset that day, riding into the fading sunset, I passed the sign marking the road to the Sand Creek Massacre site. I turn onto the road with the sun a few degrees below the horizon. The color of the clear sky a thick purple, the road bronze & gold in my headlight. A very hypnotic moment. As I rode along, the sand deepened & I questioned my judgement of riding such a road at this time of day. I reversed course & sacked out in Eads, CO. The next day, I spent some time at Bent's Old Fort.

But, this is Colorado, outside the jurisdiction of this thread. Kansas, the whole Great Plains, are interesting and diverse.

Nah, I kid, I kid. I love backwater Kansas, I always have. I think MO and KS have to be the most underrated states in the nation.

You can usually maintain a pretty good clip on the rural 2-lanes. Don't know 96, but alot of them are 65 mph with little or moderate traffic.

Wow thanks for the pics! We just got to Wichita KS for 2 weeks for a rally and had no idea there was anything like that here. Those look like some neat ideas for trips. Please post more and where to find these things. I love visiting old historic sites.

Just love these kind of reports to put in my memos on places to visit next time I'm in the area roaming about. I've done lots of western Kansas but not too much eastern or central. Keep on feeding us info on a great state with a great history.

This kind of threads is amazing for me, because show an part of EEUU that normally not know far of your country.

Great thread- I love these historic threads, and the wide open plains- Get away from the main highways and the plains are as beautiful and interesting as anywhere in the world. I just rode across Kansas twice in the last week- unfortunately I had to just make time and couldn't explore. Between this thread and Bake's thread, I'm thinking I'm going to have to make time for a big plains adventure ride someday. Thanks, and keep it coming!
