I'm going to Puerto Vallarta for a four day weekend next week. Anybody know of any motorcycle rentals in the area? No scooters. A long time ago, I read about a place that rents Harleys, but I can't find any reference now.

I don't know about Vallarta, but there's a place in Sayulita (the next town north, maybe 20 minutes on a local bus?) that rents quads and small bikes. It's run by a guy named Wyeth from the states; I didn't rent from them but spent some time shooting the breeze and having a beer about local riding. I wouldn't hesitate to rent from them. I think he rides a 650R, but I think they rent something smaller.

I just googled and believe this is their website:

Having been to PV a number of times and having seen the level of quality control and craftsmanship that goes into most (I'm sure not all) of the service-related products there I really really feel the need to say, "God speed." And, be sure to carry all of you lucky charms with you.

Of course, it could have been a fluke that the one time I was on a rental jet ski the throttle busted while I was way way way off shore and, as I sat there trying to figure out what to do, a parasailer crashed into the water not far from me. Turns out the clip that held her sail to the tow line snapped and down she parachuted into the water.

I agree. I've been to Vallarta several times and I don't think there's much mechanical aptitude there.

Thanks for the thoughts... I'm going to Vallarta in May... I would really love to do a little exploring on a motorbike, but I've been a little unsure if it's a wise idea.... plus I don't want to travel with gear. If anyone else has links or info I'm still interested.

PV Motos is a shop there, and the owner, a youngish guy, may be able to fix you up.

I would NOT recommend trying to ride a motorcycle in PV unless you are very used to driving in insane conditions - high speed and lots of vehicles of all shapes and sizes weaving in and out at all times. I was still considering renting while I was down there but the moment I got in the cab from the airport and saw the way they drive there I was very sure I would not be trying that.

Furthermore the streets are not well marked with a lot of one-ways you just seem to have to know. Road signs are small and hard read, especially as they fly by when the speed of traffic.

If you were heading out of town, yeah, maybe, but inner city driving is just nuts.

We are off to PV in three weeks, for a month there. Any update on rental bikes in Sayulito. Prefer a dualsport.... .

I go to PV every year around Christmas. I have never seen anything for rent there except scooters and quads. I have rented scooters there. A previous poster was right about traffic conditions. You really have to pay attention, streets are not well marked, lots of pot holes.

I don't think the traffic there is any worse than a lot of places. I did some riding in PV last December and didn't have any problems. Just pay attention and mind your situational awareness. Expect the unexpected. It's just like riding in the great U.S. of A.

All cities are like that; once you get out of town there is an immense amount of beautiful riding to be done.
