let's see a picture of your camping setup and how it all fits on your bike... please

Used my Giant Loop Coyote on the Dakar for the first time yesterday to do a one nighter camping trip. worked great! Behind the GL is my Kermit Chair and bungeed on in front of it is my 12-pack Polar Bear cooler.

That tent is a Mountain Hardware Pacific Crest Trail II. I have one and like cafe racer says its small. I refer to it as a two lesbian tent. Two smaller people who really like each other. I don't think they make it any more.

Have to get my fish scale out again as the weight changed from when I was on the FZ6 but I think it's around 50 or 60ish lbs counting the luggage itself.

Really do like the looks of that tent. Brand? Cost? Where can I get one

The tent appears to be a Hilleberg brand. They are very good and very expensive.

The Eureka! spitfire 2 tent is very similar looking to that tent too. Its a good backpacking tent as it packs small and light. The only downside is that you need to stake it on the edges.

Wow and I thought I traveled heavy... Here is my load on a two-week trip:



Most of the weight is on my back, which I really don't like. But the problem is we ride some gnarly single track at times and carrying a lot of stuff just is not practical. Would be nice to have some extra comfort items, but the trail is hard enough without a lot of extra stuff on the bike. If the trail gets really bad, I can just take the pack off, ride the almost-naked bike through the difficult section, and then just walk back and get the pack. Can't do that with a bunch of panniers and other stuff affixed to the bike.

Great thread though... good to see all of the different ways folks are approaching the packing problem. Some great ideas and clever solutions here!

try the GL Mo'Javi. It wouldn't get all the weight off your back, but it will take a sizable part of the load with almost zero negatives to the bikes handling. Even in the gnarly stuff.

I like the looks of the GL stuff and how it seems to carry the load down low but how durable are they? What I have read seems to suggest they are pretty tough bags but if you lay the bike down in the rocks or wash out in a turn and go down how are the GL bags going to fare?

Another thread seemed to complain that they were not truly waterproof... lots of rain and lots of water crossings on some of the rides I am on so this would be a major issue for me.

The GL gear for me has proven to be quite durable, though it's a fact they are not 100% waterproof.
I found out the hard way on this ride.





I now work around that with large ziplock bags for stuff I don't want to get wet and keep my essential camping gear in truly waterproof bags, like the Wolfman Rollie and the Kreiga US 10.

If you ride in wet conditions regularly, maybe a Wolfman Rollie setup like Cyborgs would suit you better:
