I have a 14' enclosed trailer that I would like to use to transport both the 990 and the RZR on a camping trip in a few weekends. Problem is, even if I run the RZR right up against the front wall of the trailer, I have nowhere near enough room to secure the bike in the normal, fore-&-aft position, so I was thinking of removing both wheels and transporting it with something like an old tire or folded moving blanket under the Weld 86 skid plate. I don't know yet how exactly it would fit in the trailer, but I'd ratchet-strap the shit out of it. By the way, I have no room for either in the pickup because it's a Quad Cab with a crossover box. I thought about clamping the axle in the forks maybe just to keep everything in line, but beyond that, I don't really know what I would be getting myself into. Please tell me if this is an idiotic idea. I just want to put my EXP to the test...
Here is a little KTM being unpacked from OEM crate, the forks are bolted to the crate. Would something like that work? If you have to take both wheels off then I would probably take off the forks and shock as well so it will sit flat on the frame/skidplate and bolt it down via the footpegs.
Wow that's gonna be hard. Does your enclosed have a pretty long 'V' on the tongue? Could you put a track across the 'V' as close as possible to the front of the trailer and strap the bike to the "V'?
I can see doing this with a thumper, at maybe 275lbs. But a 990 at 500lbs is gonna be more than a chore.
Seems like a 14' trailer should hold a RZR and a 950 just fine. Putting the bike at an angle in the nose should give you plenty of room for the RZR.
Just what I was thinking when I bought the trailer, and it seemed to get a bunch shorter on the drive home.
This might well work depending on the length of the bike with the front wheel off. If it came to removing forks & shock, I think I'd just leave it at home. Thanks for the ideas.
I've seen this done before. get a smaller trie and put on the front. it will make the bike much shorter and you can still role it . something like a wheel from a 50 or 65cc bike. but tieing it down on the skid plate wont hurt it. just tie it down good.
Due to an aversion to planning ahead, I won't be able to put this idea to use this trip, but it sounds like a good one. Thanks.
welcome. I've seen it done a few times. It works good and it's a lot easier to move the bike around when it will still role then with out a tire at all. The last time I saw it there where 3 bikes done this way crammed into the front of a inclosed trailer with several quads behind them. And I'm actually looking at doing it with my dirtbike when I get a trailer built to pull behind my street bike to carry it with me. that way it will lower the dirtbike and not have sitting so high and make it top heavy.
How about one of these to put the bike in sideways. Then tie it down? http://www.turnabike.com/products/saddle/
Cool idea-- thanks. If the trailer is wide enough, that might be the way to go: ride it up in there, shove the wheeled gizmo under the rear wheel & square it up with the back of the RZR.
I don't get it. A 14' trailer and you can't get two bikes in it? I've a 16' trailer with cabinets, a fold down queen bed, all my camping gear, and I can get my 990A, a BMW F650GS, and two KTM XC dirt bikes. I've installed removable wheel chocks for the bikes and it works perfectly. I suppose I should ask how wide is the trailer? Mine is 8.5' which does allow me to park bikes 3 wide in the middle/rear with one up front. I could probably add another bike up front also.
I just saw the price on this thing. $255!! :eek1 I think I might try my floor jack as a (cheap) variation on this idea.
