...and I'm waiting for NikaSil plated bores instead of iron liners for better heat dispersion.
(wish in one hand, shit in the other; see which one fills up faster.)

Something tells me, that there might be something in the design of the Urals boxer engine, that might not work with that concept. (why else would Ural keep the iron lined jugs and not take advantage of the improved technology themselves?):ear

...although I am curious, how many CC's could one gain by removing the iron liners (if what you suggest is possible) and plating the cylinders?
I also have never seen any company offer straight NikaSil plated alloy jugs for ANY straight air cooled Boxer out there.

    BMW has nikasil bores.

My 86 r80 had em, as did my 92 r100gs

I did not know that...thank you!
Come the day I can afford a Ural, I should be able to afford the plating then = something to look forward to.

i don't know what good plating nikasil over a steel/iron liner would be.

all of the nikasil jugs ive used/seen have been aluminum bores, plated in nikasil, jaguar v8's are alloy block with nikasil bores, as are MBZ alloy block engines.

What you describe is exactly what I want...(for superior heat management and longevity)
Can one remove the iron liners in a Urals jugs, refinish them and NikaSil plate them?
I know the DRZ and DR650's use the plating instead of steel liners and have no problems at all.

...looks like I'll have to join soviet steeds and ask over there.:ear

to my knowlege, no, nikasil is most effective on aluminum jugs.

i think nikasil would kind of defeat the purpose of an iron liner.

iron liners definitely do have their place, they expand less, and can be honed and bored, where as nikasil cant. chip the nikasil, its bad news bears. gotta send out to replate,

I think you missed my question/point...I was talking about being able to have a Ural with NikaSikl plated all alloy jugs. (hence the comment about removing the iron liners, refinishing the jugs and having them plated with NikaSil for more efficient cooling)

the liners are much thicker than just the nikasil coating.

youd have to re cast cylinders, and bore them, then have them coated...... id stick with iron liners.

It is also possible to bore out the iron liners and fit mikasil aluminum liners. It is done on some outboards where the heat transfer from Iron liners is too low, to save those expensive blocks. I do not know how successful it is. I know of one that had it done by a good mechanic, and it was still running when I sold my trailer. Of course many outboards only get 50 hours or less a year.
