Shamefully i want to call for all your help in determing the function and position of a steel ring that was left over after reassembling my 2003 1150 GSA engine. I removed the exhaust, tank, injection and took the engine completely apart. During assembly i searched closely for any possible position of this ring.

    Specifications: Steel (hardened) ring, OD=41,6mm (1,64") ID=36,25mm (1,43") thickness 2,17mm (0,085")

    Anyone seen this part somewhere?

    Thanks in advance..

Did you happen to change the fork seals sometime? Looks to be the spacer beneath the fork seal.

I did not have a chance jet to look at the bike itself, but according to the parts fiche no such part is used at the exhaust or the front forks..

Thanks for the feedback anyway! I am starting to think the previous owner used it as a temporarily problem solver that turned pertmanent, but where????

    Regards!

I did look at that parts fiche but the "seal" looks to have two holes to accomodate the bolts...

that and since when were manifold "seals" made of hardened steel ...

Just go on a ride at lower speeds just in case of a major failure. Either your problem will show up or thats a part for the extra bin. Either something will leak or break if its major. Be safe.

It's not a seal for the exhaust port. The flange seals to the head with a flat oval gasket with holes for the exhaust flange studs. Perhaps it isn't part of the engine.

I bet that #2 is not a polished STEEL ring.
O-Ring is a soft material Seal.

Am I the only one who would be more, rather than less, nervous about where that ring belongs after hearing numerous guesses, some of which are obviously uninformed guesses? (No disrespect intended, and JVB gets a heavily weighted positive score, of course.)

I'd be talking to the most experienced certified BMW tech I could find. Maybe two or three of them. Although I'd be even more nervous if THEY didn't have one common, boilerplate answer to my question.

Of course, I don't have the cojones to have dismantled my engine to begin with, so...
