Hey guys, Looking for a good quality 2 or 3 piece rod that is good to put on the bike. I really would prefer not to buy crap. I also do not need the most expensive rod in the world. Seeking something to catch bream, flathead, some freshwater and maybe a barra or mangrove jack(with much care) using bait or lures. What have you guys got ? Where did you get it? How much was it? How do you carry it? Pictures would be fantastic, and appreciated. Cheers, Rob
Hey Rob, I have a nice 3 peice shakespear ugly stick that packs very small. I find it to be a great all round rod and have caught fish in fresh and salt water using baits and flicking lures. using a little egg beater real with it. I think it cost me around $7o from BCF. It came in a tube which I still pack it in. I have a large water proof duffle bag and I normally pack it in that. The tube stops it suffering from crushing injuries. You coud use some 60mm/90mm conduit or storm water pipe with end cap as well happy fishing Eddy
Shimano does 3 versions of their travel series: T curve offshore $180-200 T curve inshore $180-200 Mexican fire raider II $120-130 They are all carbon blanks and break down into 3-4 pieces and fit into a PVC tube case (less than 80cm in length) that comes with most of the rods (the T-curves anyway). I thought about somehow carrying a tube over 80cm and using non-travel rods on the bike but its starts to become impractical. Just straps onto the dry bag on the rear rack. The lighter inshore T-curves or the Mexican fire II would probably fit your needs. The online fishing forums talk about the new MF raider II being sub standard compared to the first version of them but I reckon unless you are fishing all the time with it it should be fine. I went with a 9ft T curve as I wanted to fish a heavier line class. Well made rod and fishes, well, like a rod should? Bought from the local fishing tackle store. I also years ago had a travel version of a Shakespeare rod 2-4 kg line class and it was great until I snapped the tip of it. Thats the problem with carbon blanks I spose - you gotta use that little bit more care with them.
Got one of these - http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Sho...Piece-Pack-Casting-Rod/product/10204876/46790 Reasonable quality and action, cheap enough that if it gets damaged it's not the end of the world. Short enough broken down to strap anywhere on the bike in its bag.
Had a nice small 2 piece Ugly Stick I used to take with me years ago. Just make sure you have a foolproof way to secure it to the bike. I thought I did. Did over 200k`s before I knew it was gone. More fool me.
Crystal River Executive Travel Pack Spinning Combo http://www.troutlet.com/Crystal-River-Executive-Travel-Pack-Spinning-Combo-P129.aspx I went through several other rod/reel packages and this one has not yet broken.
I have the t-curve offshore 4 piece. It packs in a 50mm PVC pipe that I run carry in my camel-back. I run a baitcaster overhead on it and carry a heap of lures. Never go on a trip without it. I also take a small trap net for catching freshwater prawns and redclaw. I pack the trap folded flat on top of the bbq plate. Nothing beats freshly caught BBQ'd Barra and Redclaw in the Gulf country. I even caught a good feed of Yabbies in Birdsville.
Thats why you should always have a mate followering you to pick up all the shit that falls off your bike I have good mates with good carrying capacity BCF still sell the telescopic rods which I have used on 2 cape trips and the gulf trip last year, team it up with a good little egg beater and you have a durable handy outfit.( it's about the only item that Hunsta has not had to retrieve for me )
Great response and excellent info. Thanks I'm checking out some of the leads that you've given me already, but please keep the brands, ideas and carrying options coming. I appreciate it, and i'm sure some others would like to know as well. Rob
Yes but will it land my 30kg Barra this year crossing the Mitchel ? And i never picked anything up that fell off your bike
Carry a telescopic rod (not the best quality, but ok for river fishing)and gear in PVC tube under saddle bag. When she was nice and new!
My new setup: Some PVC pipe. Fits my tent poles and rod. Rod is 1.95m 4-piece Ugly Stick Reel is Pflueger 9030XT which was on sale @$100 from Anaconda a while back - goggles for size reference.
I have a telescopic rod I bought for $12 from the markets. About 30cm packed and 2m extended. Not great quality but if it breaks or I lose it no biggy. Landed this no probs......
