    Afternoon, something like this:

I would challenge the official if it didn't feel right or if there was no clear direction after the diversion

Tough call in the instance an official tells you to go a different direction.

If it were a member of the public though or my roadboook, I'd choose the roadbook every time

Ok, I'm back and caught up (mostly :D, not the video yet). But, updates from Darryl Curtis just came in. Lets see if I can link them properly.

Staff indeed could have been there and legitimately pointed folks in the right direction
this was at the highest peak as Yan said.

One thing to keep in mind here however is that Barreda made a point of saying how on the decent
there were many places where one could get confused and go the wrong way, and that he really took his time
making sure he was on track.

From all the comments and info all I can piece together is that this truly was an epic stage, from both difficulty of piste, altitude, terrain and navigation perspectives and that there were a few (or even just one) very tricky and crucial notes in the book that got a whole lot of people into a whole heap of trouble.

I am having a tough time at the moment coming up with anything other then "follow-the-wrong gate"

zis iz d Dakar after all

Hogwild- I know youre a guy with a job and all-- but could you locate the ravine they all went down and couldnt get back out of? It must be just on the other side of that little hill in the background :D

Interesting how those little tracks in the sand get overused as clues :D

It really would be a different world if the preceding bikes left no trace. THere would be folks stretched out over a 50 mile wide front :loll

I have Eurosport video of Etienne last year, hopped out the heli, pointing direction for one of the Aliens, and perhaps others. I think it was a tricky section.

One thing is for sure...it sounds like one hell of a place to have made a wrong turn into. It'd be interesting to see some video if any surfaces.

I found one of the lost bikes. When I zoomed in with Google Earth it was clearly there in the ravine.
