So I'm seeing a few Buell Ulysses XB12XP for sale now. They seem to be a bit cheaper than the regular Ulysses. Maybe the market is so much smaller to sell the police version with the lights and siren so they are cheaper. So can we civvies legally own one of these that still has the lights and siren? I'm sure its legal to OWN but not legal to USE the lights and siren. I'm thinking of taking the forward blue lights off and put fog lights on the mounting points. But what to do with the side and rear strobe lights? The siren I'm sure can be converted to be a really loud horn!
Depends on the state but you may be required to cover the red/blue lights. Get caught running the siren/lights and you might find yourself in trouble. A friend of mine collects old fire vehicles. Most cops are pretty cool about not covering the lights but He has been hassled a couple times. Never seen a Buell police model. How about a pic?
It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?
It's an XB12X with cop farkles and some secret thingies. I want one. Somebody please buy my XB12 XT so I can buy one.
Lights and sirens are usually illegal, as well as, police markings. Some states even black and white is illegal, but with a Buell that's easy. IIRC, the engine profiles are the same, but it has a high capacity electrical system and bigger oil cooler. Police bikes can be a mixed bag. If ridden by a good rider, and well cared for, then they can be a bargain. However, if not, then they can be a nightmare. I know of a guy who bought a used RT-P and spent more to repair it than the bike cost him. The bike had only 35k on it, but it was hard city miles and the bike was just about done.
Yeah one I looked at did not have the policy markings but had the lights and siren. It would be cool to have fun with that stuff but I'm not the type to want to get in trouble by pretending to be a cop. I also realized they have smaller panniers versus the regular XT version. Is there any market for the police lights and siren if I take them off and sell them? Thanks for all of your answers. Loved the Blues Brothers line!
Is there any market for the police lights and siren if I take them off and sell them? E-Bay is your friend... sell with the lenses to "protect" them during shipping and have purchasers prove Dept. affiliation...
It's not illegal to have them, or to have them mounted. You just can't activate the emergency equipment on a public roadway. There are SEVERAL offenses you could be charged with. Surprising they are offerred with the warning equipment on them. My dept takes that stuff off before they go to auction. We usually donate it to smaller agencies or send it abroad on an exchange type program.
More than likely, the "lights" are LED, not strobe, so they have a clear appearance when off. State laws about possession and use vary. Some make possession illegal, others only regulate use. If you buy it, there is a market for used police stuff. Starting with me... if the lights are Whelen TIR3 in red / blue (common install on bikes) I'd be interested in buying them. The TIR3 in red also makes a bad ass extra brake light on a cycle...
