I just got off the phone with garmin tech support and have all issues resolved.
one problem was that I needed a certain version of Mapsource and new drivers
and another was that it could not connect to the unit because the unit was not in "Mass Storage mode" DOH !

the Roads and Rec is definitely the way to go. the detail is just like a paper map !

if anyone has a problem like this just call Garmin tech support and they will walk you through everything
the support tech spent an hour teaching me how it all works

there is no way anyone here could have the knowledge or resources or want to budget their time to help
but thanks for the support

I can see how this GPS gadget with Roads and Recs could come in handy now

city nav is pretty much only good for finding the nearest starbux or delivering pizza maybe
what a shame they cancelled R&R
