It's getting a convert motor transplant. The original motor had a big bore kit in it and it looks like the sleeve slid down a little and hit the connecting rod, not a good thing.
Here is the cylinder from my convert motor that is going to the Eldorado. Just a little honing should do it.
Positive it's a 74? Pretty sure that was the 1 year Eldorado had a disc brake, and also last year of the Eldo.
This is a '74 Eldorado 850 I can't find any "Police" stuff on it... I'm thinking it's the "California" version.
Yup the first batch had the four leading show front brake and Amal carbs. So it is kind of a rare bike in Guzzi land. Check Greg Fields history of Moto Guzzi.
Turns out the cylinder didn't clean up very well but by good luck my local ex Guzzi dealer had a NOS cylinder with piston and rings siting on the shelf and gave me a very good price. Also three of the four lifters where pretty pitted so I send them out to be refinished. I have a new timing chain and tensioner to install, gearbox is out being gone through, once the motor is together I'll attack the frame.
Did you really say "refinish those lifters"???? WoW. Step away from the valvetrain, nothing to see here folks. I thought you were joking about the cylinder too. Wow, you weren't.
Resurface? I had three mechanics tell me just to reuse them as is but I couldn't bring my self to do it.
Who are these ex Guzzi mechanics? I live right around the corner from you, and am just about to rip into an old Guus... I want to avoid your "advisors"...
Well none of them work on bikes anymore but the general feeling was they have seen a lot of high mileage Guzzis with pitted lifters and no problems cause by them. The last couple of Guzzi motors I had apart have had pitted lifters and the cam and bearings looked fine. So it's kind of like yes you should replace them but don't worry about it if you don't.
The motor is almost all together, lifters refinished,new timing chain and tensioner, seals, new left cylinder with new piston and rings, right cylinder cleaned up nice so just new rings.Gear box is out to be gone through.[/IMG] Next the frame. I had some work done on my shoulder back in November so I'm just getting back into the swing of things.
