Sundown opened today. Got out for a few hours. Nothing better than skiing in Iowa. Conditions were perfect, lots of snow. Scenic snow covered mountain vistas. But there was some snow. Sundown is only about 40% open. It is supposed to get cold for the next 36 hours and I'm sure they will open up a least a couple of more runs by the weekend. Unfortunately weekend temps are going to be in the 40's, so I will probably stay home. Weekends are too busy and with soft snow, I'll pass.
We were talking about going to Chestnut on Saturday, since I think its going to be $9 lift tickets. Normally, whatever the date is, thats the price. Anyone interested in going?
Well, I'll be damned, skiing in Iowa? Then how come we get all those Iowa plates up here? I don't slide down hills in the snow myself, but the kids in my house are snowboarders.
My son's coming up for a day this weekend, but I'm not sure which day yet. It's going to be warm, so I might just pass and work in the timber and ride my trials bike.
I think Sundown has more vertical drop than Aspen Alps. But AA has a lot more runs. You get the losers from DesMoines. It's just a straight shot to MN, up Hwy 35, for them.
If you've ever been down the toboggan run at Chestnut in the summer, you'd say it was plenty steep. I wore my mc helmet and gloves.
No, I never made it to the Fly-in. I always wanted to go but, it never seemed to work out.. Do you stop by Sindt's much?? I used to ride with Gary quite often.
Since this is a skiing thread, yes, I've skied with Gary. I live one mile from their place and bought my last race bike from them.

I'm out for any group skiing on Saturday. The boy is coming up in the afternoon. I might sneak out in the morning for a few hours. Sunday looks like a free day too, but since it's going to be warm, I'll probably ski in the morning and ride the trials bike in the afternoon. Nothing like dirt biking and skiing all in the same day.
Went to Chesnut on Saturday, the amount of snow they had there was amazing!! Heres an idea, buy the worlds smallest car, then buy the largest Thule box for the roof! :huh My nephew getting some air in the terrain park All in all, a good day. Felt pretty good for the first time out this season.
Went to Sundown today for a few hours, skiing was perfect. Then a few hours on the trials bike in the afternoon. How many times do you get to ski and dirt bike in the same day, in Iowa? The CO guys think they have all the fun.
Buncha wimps who can't climb the hills without help. Cross country ski season was off to an awesome start last week up here in da UP, but then the weather took a dive this weekend. Might need to go back to running this week. More info on the trails in the area: http://www.keweenawtrails.com/ If you head up this way for some cross country skiing, look for the fat dude in a gray sweatshirt that appears to have been placed too close to the wood stove. I've got this bright idea to enter the 26km classic in The Great Bear Chase in March, so I should be out on the trails a lot this year getting ready.
I've been awfully close to buying a set of XC skiis for a few years now, the only problem is that the snow hasn't been worth a hoot for a long time. We have some great trails around here if we ever get a good winter!!
Umm, sorry not here. I've qualified Wave 2 for the Birkie for several years. Best time is under 3 hours, although I'm not in that kind of shape anymore.
DAILY SNOW REPORT December 17th, 2006- We have approximately 90% of the area open with an average groomed base of 10" to 25". In the Terrain Park we have boxes, the wall, flats, the rainbow, a session rail and a 40' flat down flat. This is the report from Sundown. Don't believe it, stay home. I was out a couple of days ago and it's getting pretty bad. Fine for the locals, but I sure wouldn't travel to ski. We need natural snow or cold temps so they can start making snow again. I don't think they have been able to make snow for over a week.
