Hi, Looking for some (non-discontinued) models of bucksaw/packsaw. Must be 18in long or less when disassembled (to fit in hard case). Preferably a good 6in deep and not a triangle design. (This is strictly for unblocking road of fallen trees when unmoveable and no way around/under/over; it is not for camping or building a commercial center!) Any favorite models? Links?
I like the Sven 15 inch too. It is a triangle shape assembled but packs small. A cut to length mountain bike inter tube make a good protective sleeve for it. It will fit in a 100 oz size Camel Bak too.
Just buy a Silky hand saw and be done with it. Cutting anything bigger than about 8" with a hand saw is a lot of work.
My two cents (and I have sawed trees by hand!) : Your right-hand sawing on a tree IS very hard and the reason I'd only consider a "swedish" style, thin, sharp, blade in a frame that folds- that will do a tree of size w/o killing you. I see pics here in thread of what are best described as high quality "pruning saws"?
I wished mine was red like that one. The saw has a quality blade and works very well. I did buy a spare blade just in case. I have used it a lot, Of course I just walk out of camp with a round small tube and come back with an arm load of cut wood. Other riders are amazed with the saw when I show it to them.
Can you tell me how long is the tube (to the 1/4 in) ? looks more than 18in long if the blade is 18in.... :huh
I have one similiar to this... cuts great. http://www.cutleryshoppe.com/ultimatesurvivalsabercutsaw.aspx
I went and looked and it is close enough but not longer then 19 inch's. now in the bag that it store's in, it's almost 20 inch's hope that helps. It's a sweet saw!
Also like the Sven saw. Also, makes a good jack under swing arm or skid plate for changing tires on the trail if you don't have a center stand.
I have one like this. Look on you tube , you will see videos on how to make one the size you want. Very easy to make. It takes down and packs away small.
To bad these are all longer than your 18" requirement. http://fourdog.com/bobs-quick-buck-saws/ I have the 21" version and it's the best camping/backpacking saw I've used. (And it's made in the Minnesota...) -jw
I would think the portable buck saw could be made shorter. The length is due to storage for the blade. Storing the blade in a flexible sheath would allow it to fit a smaller space and the handle could be cut down.
Find your local Stihl chain saw dealer and have a look at the variety of pruning saws they have (which is quite a few). They are very reasonably priced vrs the specialty saws sold at sporting good stores. DW
+1 on the Stihl. I have the first one pictured.. Good steel. I have used a Sven saw, but never owned one. Worked great. The "Bob's saw" looks good! JP
While I'm a "Stihl guy" the saw above looks like pure torture to cut a tree with! The wooden home made looks interesting for sizing to fit on a MC-just buy a blade or cheapo Chinese and throw away the steel frame. FWIW, The Chinese small ones would fit in the OP's case & work OK for awhile.
The Stihl is fine to about 4 inches. The Sven has limitations too. Couldn't agree more with fabbing up something that breaks down, yet will handle something much larger. I have some ash laying around that would work nicely for a frame. Buck simple .
