We're headed to Baja at the end of April and it's not too soon to start fishin' for some good camp/motel spots. We don't plan on going south of Mulege, and we've got two weeks, so some multi-night layovers are a definite possibility. Last trip we had some great evenings camping on the beach, or up in the mountains, at spots we just stumbled into. Good as these were, we really enjoyed LA Bay, Gerero Negro, and of course the Hacienda in Mulege. This time around we'd like to check 'em out again, snag some GPS waypoints for 'em, and optimize the between spots with suggestions from other travelers. If you've got a favortie spot, and maybe some waypoint data for it, we'd be really appreciative of shared info! Happy Trails, Scot
check out my tracks here: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=109986 if it's a route you are thinking. I can give you some info.
Took a quick trip down in Nov. If you use the tracks from the above post "7 days in Baja" it will take you past several great camp/hotel beaches. On another topic: 1. I work in Dublin (Hopyard) and am always looking for folks to ride with 2. I too spell my name (Scot) with one T Have a great trip!
You will want to include an overnight at Scorpion Bay...San Juanico, on the Pacific side. The sunrises are such that you will think Timothy Leary was your personal chef the night before.
Found a great beach about 12 miles south of Mulege at N26.76900 W111.89502. There are two trails, the one to the left goes to EcoMundo where you can rent kayaks & snorkel gear and which also has the best palapa's I've ever seen, some open, some enclosed, all with cots, tables, chairs, and hammocks etc. The trail to the right goes to a really nice secluded beach with the regular two sided palapa's. The secret for me was finding a beach far enough off the highway that the night time truck traffic wasn't bothersome. There's a half finished abandoned house at N30.14679 W114.64040, about 15 miles south of Puertecitos. I didn't stay there but it looks like others have as there was a fire pit out front.
Some out of the way spots i really like-you said only north of Mulege-all accessable on a KTM 950 with an average rider: 1) Bahia Tortuga (side trip to Malarimo)-ride out to the point where the abalone divers live--look out at Cedros island. 2) San Francisco de la Sierra rent a mule and do an overnight trek into a mini grand canyon. view hundreds of 10,000 year old cave art. Its the oldest art in the new world--a World Heritage Site--and none of the 'baja gurus' know about it. Awesome place. 3) Olde Mille at San Quintin-order the seafood combo. 4) Rancho Coyote-just off the observatory road near Rancho Melling. Nice rooms. Great food. incredible location. Its the olde west still going strong. 5) Alfonsinas at Gonzaga. Better than Bay of LA. 6) San Francisquito-a bit run down now--but still an amazing place for a day or two. 7) Pet a whale-San Ignacio Lagoon-ride out to the 2nd or 3rd 'kayak camp'-take a ponga out to the whales... 8) Guadalupe hotsprings--just west and a little south of Mexicali. Great place to start the trip. 9) San Nicholas Hotel in Ensenada. The only place to stay. Note the pictures of Steve Mc Queen, Malcolm, others on the walls. They all stayed there. 10) Playa Coyote south of Mulege on the water. If you are lucky you can get the spot with the Date Palms. Great spot. 11) Take the road up into the Sierra de la Gigante - turn off 7-8 miles north of Mulege. Commondu, San Miguel are like the 19th century. San Javiere is the jewel of the Gigante range--but that might be a bit south for you. Hope you get to try some of these spots. Not bad for a first post?
I will cross post this with the Hotels in Mexico thread because I put these there with coordinates. San Felipe Gonzaga
