The model for Version 2 is coming together.

Do you see where the two clutch cover bolts are used to hold the model in place? The bolts are out right now as the primer is still drying.

Another angle of the rough part. What do you think?

Looks like a winner to me. Great job. Are you planning more attachment points than the 2 clutch cover bolts?

So far, no. I thought about a top brace, but the only thing I could think of bracing against would be the engine, and I don't want to do that. The part is very sturdy as is because it wedges back against the frame.

If something were to break in a crash, I would much prefer that the part tear away rather than taking a chance on damaging the engine.

Invest in a mold and a vacuum, and you could start selling these.

    True.
You might also open up the section in the "V" of the frame. It would also make a good third point of attachment there. Using zipties or some kind of clamp.

I was thinking the zip-tie approach as well, but the model bolts up so tightly that the part won't move once attached with the two bolts. I'm going to have to build a part or two and see how strong the part ends up to know for sure. The first part I built was seven layers of twill fabric. It was as hard as a rock and totally inflexible.

cool.....maybe keep an eye on it......see if it vibrates.......maybe lay a thin layer of sticky back felt between your sheild and frame......if it does vibrate it mite keep it from scratching up your frame.....

Way ahead of you. I cut up a bicycle tube and taped that to the frame before I started the model. The end product should have comparable strips of rubber glued on the back to protect the frame.

Not sure about the procurement of the stuff but if you can get it from the supplier.. Get BMI preimpregnated material.. Much better with high temp application.

Nice job.. I look for to seeing v2.

    Thanks

I've made some progress. The mold isn't perfect, but it should work:

Looks awesome good work. If you go into any production there is a brake lever stop on the 990 and many of us have installed it on the 950 to save the push rod from being pulled out of the rear brake slave. Your cover will interfere with those who have upgraded their 950s and all 990s. Just saying! Looks sweet! :freaky

Good to know. Thanks. I see that little thing in pictures. It looks like the shield could be drilled to accept that part. It would just be a matter of locating the drill point. Hmmmm.

I don't think the smaller guard is a viable solution. The bolts that attach the carbon to the exhaust pipe get too hot and will decay the epoxy fairly quickly. That's why I've moved on to try and find a way to avoid attaching the carbon directly to the exhaust pipe.

I run one just like that on my son's Baja Race bikes all the time.
it is a Aprapovic Carbon Pipe gaurd.
You need to tack weld two nuts to the head pipe then use two SS 6mm bolts with Heat washers.

I will buy one . (paypal)
