Suppose one was to mock up a bike in military garb (circa 1937-45). Would you get as close as possible to the source (Royal Enfield Bullet or Ural)
Or take a modern classic like a Scrambler and farkle away?
Reason im asking is I saw a neat Bonnie done up in a WWII style despatch bike, but with a R75 twist. Wish I could post pick here but alas....
If it were me, Id go with the Bullet and keep it as close to the BSA M20 as possible (with blackouts etc)
If going along the German lines, the closest thing is the Ural (Im thinking solo- not outfit) or small bore 2 smoker a la DKW but whats close to that?
    Anyhow just thinking aloud.....

The Bullet would be very cool looking and not so expensive as other options.

You can get either one of them in military editions, and the gear to go with that.

Ural's even have machine gun mounts. Go figure.

    ...especially the two strokes.
However, you could try an RE Bullet with the rigid rear end conversion as here http://www.hitchcocksmotorcycles.com/accessory-kits-rigid and replace the front forks with girders.
A Chang Jiang would be closer to the period you seek than a Ural, historically speaking (that suspension thing again).

In my defence, I will confess to be just a tad pedantic when it comes to period detail.... ;-)

Iron barrel Bullets came right from the factory in a military version, in a semi-flat OD color. I had a choice of a chrome DeLuxe, or the military one when I got my RE in 2007. I already had two WW2 M20s, so I went with the chrome one, but that military Bullet was pretty sharp-looking.

Ex US military side valve Harley's were very very popular in Holland in the 70s and 80s, a friend of mine rode a sidecar version to India and back.

You can get actual Soviet military M-72's (Ural or Dnepr) with machine gun mounts which are a near direct copy of the BMW R-71 or a military grade 2WD Dnepr MB-750.

Or Chinese CJ-750 Peoples' Liberation Army (PLA) bikes are also an option.
