Last Monday afternoon I hit a deer just west of Rutland VT. Broke my right leg in 3 places. Had surgery on Tuesday. Holed up in a hotel trying to figure out how to get home to Parker Colorado. Broken ribs keep me from using crutches. Up to a year rehabilitation says the surgeon.

That sucks, dude. At least you are breathing and should be able to ride again!

Any more details on the crash? Speed? I've tagged a couple deer, but I've been lucky enough to keep the rubber on the road both times.

Oh shit, Charlie. I hope your recovery goes smoothly & speedily.

I have lived in fear of those fucking suicide ungulates the whole time I've lived in Wyoming, and actively encourage those who hunt to do so thoroughly at every opportunity.

Like I said, get well soon.

If you need someone to keep the seals on that SS from drying out...:evil

Biggest issue we are facing is how to get home. Fly from like Boston (hope I can get in a seat and elevate the leg. 1ST class ticket maybe? Or rent a car with a big back seat and drive. We will decide tomorrow.
Gold wing is totalled. Trailer is fixable.
I'll describe the accident later. Pain killers are kicking in and I am really sleepy.

Wow - that sux. Hopefully your MC skills and training "saved" you from it being a lot worse. You could always get a CanAm Spyder, we will let you play Tag with that! :freaky

Hope you can work from home. :deal

    Holy crap, that's awful.

I have what is essentially a deeply-bruised calf, and I've been stuck at home for several days complaining about my bad luck.

Perspective is a tough lens to see through sometimes. . . but when you get it in focus you soon realize your blessings (again).

Best on your return and recovery.

Makes my broken thumb seem like a walk in the park! I'm glad you survived Charlie! Good luck getting home and hoping you have a speedy recovery! Well, as speedy as possible under the circumstances.

Hang in there Charlie. Either way sounds like a long trip home. First class and some drugs gets my vote. Hope the deer got it worse than you.

broken in three places?? damn, that's a bad one - but you're still alive to tell the story, so that's a huge positive!

First class sounds like the way to go - you'll need the room for sure.

Glad it wasn't more serious, not like a deer strike isn't, but you know what I mean.
Take care of yourself and get well as soon as you can.

What happened? It was 2:30pm on a divided highway in Vermont. I remember glancing down at the speedo as I set the cruise control to 65mph. Split second later all I see is a deer's head 3' in front of the windshield. I can still see it in my mind.
The force if the impact ripped the bars from my hands and pivoted me forward. The bike veered sharply left and I fell off the rightside. I think the bike bounced on to the rightside and 900 lbs of bike snapped my leg. I hit the ground and rolled log style and then slid down the embankment. Thankfully I stopped well back from traffic. The car behind stopped to help. The leg will take a year to heal completely but I'm alive!
Injuries are boken tabula and fibula. It was bent forward 45 degreew and twisted 90 degrees below the knee. I have titanium rod, plate and screw in my leg.
Im a ATGMTT Guy. Had my riding pants. Broken ribs on the right. Bruises. Very little road rash. I do have poison ivy rash everywhere.
I am very thankful for all your prayers and wishes. I am blessed to have so many friends. I am blessed to have a wonderful woman in Diane. She hopped on a plane from Denver that evening.

Progressive settled with me. Totally bike. $9300 + taxes etc. Gave 3k for my accessories and gear. Let me keep the trailer. I'm having that shipped home. Next spring I can tow it behind the R 1200 gs or my next wing..

I'd rent a van and maybe put the trailer inside. You can then travel at your own pace. A couple days, but without all the airport hassles.

Ensure you stay vigilant with your PT and a year may be cut short.

You are defiantly one of the few GW riders I've seen who wears a full face helmet. Smart man...heal fast and safe travels.
