Let us say you are looking at two fairly comparably equipped R1200 GS models. They are both 2008, both the same color, and both need new tires. One has 20K on the odo, the other has 6K. Would you pay up to $575 more for the 6K version?
Generally, yes...however, someone can damage an engine in 6k miles just as much as 20k. I'd ask for any maintanence records and check the bike for how well it was treated...
I would value the higher mileage more than the low milage one. It has potentially had more service and wear items replaced.
Both the sellers have service records for the bikes. I have VIN #'s for both. One of them (6K) has a production date of 11/07 The other (20K) is 06/08
I paid $1450 more in answer to a similar quandry. 4.8k mi vs 33k mi. Both were well cared for, stock machines with factory luggage except one looked brand-spankin' new. The other had been to the Arctic Circle and had many pics covered in dirt in the desert. It was worth the $ for me to be the one to put the hard miles on it no matter how hearty these bikes are. I bought 28k less miles of wear and tear for not a huge sum extra. Like... the cost of the cruise control option on the '15
Just maybe - one had all 6000 mi. in first year and sat ever since. That could be shaky ground. Ask for maintenance records. Good luck.
There's a break-in service check at 600 miles and the first normal service is 6k. I'd pay the small price for less miles knowing that the first scheduled maintenance was just completed. You'll end up paying plenty more when you start adding farkles.
^^^ This! The lower mileage bike has been sitting a lot. Not always a good thing, and not necessarily bad, but not enough of a price difference to make me like it.
I would take the higher mileage and do the 24k service as though it had never been serviced even if the records say otherwise. With today's fuel issues, the low mileage scares the shot out of me. James
btw, my bike just hit 50,000mi and ride like a dream now. So it'll take you longer to love your bike with the low mileage one.
Optioned the same? The options were packaged as such for the 2008 model year that most bikes with ESA had TPM, ASC and chrome exhaust as well.
