I am going to cut the "brick," off of the AC power cord and wire an SAE connector on to the end coming from the GPS. I have an SAE connector running from the battery on a 1200 GS. As I am wiring the connector to the cut GPS cord, is there anything I need to worry about? Which wire goes to pos and negative? This is my first GPS, so be kind with the comments if this sounds retarded! Thanks for the help.
Normally, the exposed connector on the bike's SAE connector is negative. To make sure you can get a multimeter and check continuity between the exposed connector and bike's frame.
Oh, and on the cut off end you could plug the AC adapter in and check the connector with the multimeter. If it shows positive volts you've got it the right way, negative volts you've got it backwards.
The wiring harness sold for the purpose of hard wiring to a bike is not that expensive. It also has wire for sound that can be hooked to speakers or an ear bud. Do you have an extra AC adapter. Otherwise how do you plan to power the until while downloading routes. Yankee Dog
I plan on putting another connector on to the cut off end so that I can plug it back up. Where can I purchase one of the wired looms you are speaking of?
This is where I got mine from, there are a few other places that have them also http://www.antonline.com/p_Garmin--...Pilot-2610-and-2620-GPS-Receivers-_170698.htm
They are a little more expensive than I remember, $26. But still, much more no fuss and you get the audio should you want it. http://www.gpscity.com/item-garmin-streetpilot-26xx-power/audio-cable/sp26poweraud.htm Yankee Dog
Thanks a lot. I am assuming that cable works without the Garmin cradle? I appreciate all of your help!
