Need some advice, I was offered the following from a dealer in the GTA today: New 2008 GSA fully loaded (safety + equipment packages) 2 OEM side cases w/locks off road tires anti theft enduro transmission price out the door incl taxes = $27,218.00 Equates to getting the cases thrown in. Not convinced this makes sense given what's left in the year to ride, insurance + storage over the winter vs buying new in Spring of '09 for a few hundred more. Any thoughts??
Great deal for Bill Gates...I'd buy 5 used Dual Sports and store one in Asia, Europe, Africa, NA and SA. Then ride the world.
Where is the deal in this? Looks like full price. You could put that as a good chunk of the new BMW 335. For cases, I would buy some Pelican cases at a whole lot less money, and have a much stronger product that they will replace free if ever busted. Need some K-Y?
Agreed...keep in mind this in Canadian currency, not US. I keep hearing how in some places it's next to impossible to get any type of deal on a new GSA since they go like hotcakes, in some cases I'm told you're lucky to get one even at full price. I've read in threads on other ADV forums disclosure of prices paid and they're all pretty much the sticker price.
Even in Canadian dollars, this doesn't sound like much of a deal at all. Go to the BMW website and price out the retail cost of the bike with all the extras. I think you will find the dealer isn't really doing anything for you other than letting you know the bike is available.
I agree, that that money buy 4 KLR's and store one with you at home, one in Mexico and the others wherever your heart desires.
Even if you REALLY REALLY want a GSA, never buy one fully equipped in Canada. Buy the cases in the states, if you want the stock ones. Even with the Cdn $ drop last week, they're still 35% cheaper down there. As for the optional electronic extras this particular bike has, I just got back from 3 wks in the Alps on one. And I think excepting the ABS brakes, you can keep the rest of the ESA/traction control bull shit. The bike I picked up, a new 08 with 1500 kms, had the ESA go weird before I even got on it, rendering it unrideable. The bike itself was awesome. But BMW is overcomplicating their machines, and making guys like us pay for it. This salesman deserves pat on the back, and a laugh, that's all.
Thanks for your thoughts everyone. For the record, here's the price breakdown that was presented to me: MSRP - $19,000 Anti Theft - $250 Safety Package - $1,900 Equip. Package - $1,900 OEM side cases - $0 Total - $23,050 Freight & PDI - $695 Admin fee - $249 OMVIC - $5 Total sales price - $23,999 Fed sales tax - $1,199.95 Prov sales tax - $1,919.92 Grand Total - $27,2118.87 CAN Considering I'll likely hang on to the bike for some time, looking in the US makes more sense.
Thanks Steve, I've been rethinking all the optional extras as well and how much I'd use them or even notice a difference when they're engaged. The essentials for me are really ABS and heated grips. Is there a need for the onboard computer without all the electronic extras? Not exactly sure what this does. I've had a few bikes over the years but my last one (R1100RT) was about 10 yrs ago so this is relatively new for me again. I think the basics would do it. Thomas
Well, heated grips are standard equipement on BMW's in Canada, so that's covered [and they work really wqell on the new BTW]. The ABS seems to have been paired together into a package for '08 I think. It's worth while, I think ABS helps resale. But the rest is crap IMO. Steve
How about a bit more brutally honest advice for the following bike I just found locally: '07 GSA with the following: every available option + new metzler road tires a set of extra off road wheels/rims (continental) gps (bmw/garmin 3) trickle charger (bmw) 3 cases with inner-liners (bmw/tourtech) bmw tank bag centre stand full warranty until 2010 saw pics and it's as clean as a whistle For $18,000 ??? (Can) This sounds much more reasonable to me - would any of you call this a good deal?
That's a decent price, and at 17k, the motor is just breaking in (seriously, mine didn't loosen up until around 15k). With those extras, for myself I'd swap out the seat, add some proper driving lights, and call it done. 9 $9k saving over the other you quoted, plus the wheels and GPS. Worth it.
I'm going to have a look at it tomorrow, I don't think I'll be disappointed. I haven't ridden much on this seat but I have heard others complain bitterly on its discomfort - I'm sure that'll be my first aftermarket purchase...now, which one? I'll go over the seat threads again but Russell seems popular. Anyway I agree, I think I could live easily with this price given what's included. The dealership almost makes it sound like they're doing you a favour by selling to you - kinda like the soup nazi on Seinfeld.
try the seat first... i hated mine at first and found it quite uncomfortable. now after 20K, its broken in nicely and i can spend the whole day riding no problem... i think you're on the right track, what color is the '07? the white ones are faster right Drif (i actually dont like the new '08 colors!) good luck
Hey Thomas: I ride a '99 rt1100 and have been thinking about switching to a newer GS. However, everytime I ride my rt I enjoy it so much. It is an awesome bike IMHO. The only reason I might switch is to be able to ride a little more off road, but worry I will give up too much on road ability to gain some off road ability. If you get a GS you will have to post your impressions and comparisons to the rt. I am looking forward to an rt rider's advice/reviews. Cheers! Larry
