I may have to tp plead "Russian".... Not really worried if the tires are DOT or not. Seems the Leos are just checking for the winter markings.
Interesting thing about this law is that it would seem to make riding a motorcycle illegal between Dec 15 and March 15th. Sent the government an e-mail just now asking that very question.
This still puzzles me, do you have a link to that section 4 it refers to? Also do you have the French version? Just to see if something got lost in translation...
http://www.mtq.gouv.qc.ca/portal/pa..._hivernales/reglement_utilisation_pneus_hiver Looks like Police motorcycles are exempt even in french.
I sent an e-mail to the "Regie" that handles the vehicle laws here. I got a call later in the aft and the nice man explained to me that yes it was illegal to ride a motorcycle anytime between Dec 15th and March 15th unless it had snow tires that met the requirements of the "Regie". Guess my next step is to contact Kenda or a dealer who has some in stock and see if it has the right markings on the sidewall.
This is just plain stupid. Yet LT tires are allowed. LT just means Light Truck, it has nothing to do with a tire's ability to handle winter conditions...
Yup everyone agrees it doesn't make sense...it is the government after all. The snag is that the police are going to be checking the details on any tire of a vehicle involved in an infraction or accident as well as at spot checks. A cop friend of mine is having a hell of a time getting tires for an oddball size without spending 450$ a tire or more for new rims and tires. 2 years ago we had no snow till after x-mas and we were all riding on x-mas day. Now even if the roads are bone dry we would all be subject to a 300$ fine. I imagine the typical cop isn't going to be hassling you it is just that I hate being subject to the "discretion" of some official.
I would agree that a few million dollars were made. I'm actually in favor of peolpe using snow tires. Just wish someone made some that fit my wheels. I'm sending out some e-mails to a couple of dealers today to see if anyone has some Kendas in stock. I'm hoping they have "ice" or "stud" on the sidewall.
if you really want to mess with them, figure out what makes a tire "studded" and then put exactly that ammount of studs in them, like 2 per tire....they are still studded right?
Sadly they are only considered studded if the sidewall says "stud" or "studable". Winter tires here that have the holes for studs are marked that way even though they ship with no studs.
really? that blows....i guess that It's a canadian thing.....having lived in NY (southish of you in WNY) i know about a bunch of stupid laws...but that might be taking it to a whole new level... best of luck finding something that will work for you...
has anyone found the actual text for the law yet, I have been looking around, I still haven't found it. I find it quite silly that the page linked earlier doesn't give the number, name, section and para of the Statute/regulation. The reason that I ask is that page is someone's intrepretation of the law, and the actual wording may provide a "loophole" just big enought to ride a hack through.
My above edit clarified what I meant. I'm looking for something more like this (it's for alberta, but you get the idea)... http://www.qp.gov.ab.ca/documents/Regs/2002_322.cfm?frm_isbn=0779717090
Hope this helps. I drive a Ural Gearup so these tires will fit you. I got some Kenda K335 Ice Racing Knobbies from Ural Northwest in Bellingham. These tires are designed for ice and studs and are DOT approved. Although its not branded on the sidewall, I wonder if you could carry a photocopy of the tire blurb in your wallet with some company info to prove it is iceworthy and DOT approved ??? I found a website here http://www.kgmotorcycletires.com/kenda_k335_ice_tire.htm where they talk about it as a Ural replacement tire for winter use. I'm sure you can get something more official if you google it or ask your tire dealer. Studs are motorcycle road oriented studs from Aerostitch. Hope you can get out there now! Cheers! Rob
The code doesn't appear to say "must be inscribed by the manufacturer", etc., etc. It just says "...following inscription appear...". I'd check the definition of Inscription in the code, and if not there, then the dictionary. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/inscription Then I'd take a magic marker and write something on the side of the tire.
Used to be in the old days most(?) snow tires were retreads. I know Tomohawk retreads modern bike tires, could someone in Quebec retread a bike tire in a snow tread/ rating?
