I want to take my girlfriend to do some D/S riding around Moab, but I don't think her Harley Davidson Dyna will cut it out there :): Soo - I need to find a fairly good used street legal dirt bike that won't require loads of cash to aquire. As near as I can tell, she has about a 28 or 29 inch inseam. Any suggestions as to what make/model would be a good choice? It has to be street legal enough to make it from the motel to the trails. The Kawasaki Super Sherpa is also a smaller dual sport. 250 and electric start. I looked on the Kawasaki website and it is not listed in the 2004 models? I wonder if they have discontinued it? They still list the KLR 650 and 250. I have a KLR 250 and it works well, but it is taller than the Super Sherpa. You should be able to locate a SS used pretty easily.
Dakar 200 The Dakar 200cc is a street legal bike powered by a Yumbo built engine it delivers smooth acceleration and super crisp shifting. Easy electric starting and a kick start back-up. Rear seat pegs for a passenger. The Dakar 200 has Plenty of power here. Don't trailer it! It's to fun, ride it there. Great gas mileage around town. Fully functional head, tail and turn signals. Lockable gas cap and handy helmet rack on $1,883
Thanks for the input. I've been doing some research, and it looks like my best option is one of the 250's, Like a Suzuki DR250, Yamaha XT225, or a Kawasaki KL 250. Anybody have any experience with these? It looks like a good 10 year old one can be had for ~$1500. Also, I'm not clear on the differences between the KLR250 and the Sherpa. It looks like the KLR is water cooled and the Sherpa air cooled? Is on more dirt oriented? Thanks again Kevin 2TD
I do not know all the differences but the KLR250 is kick start, a little taller, a little mroe dirt oriented. SS is shorter with electric start.
Kevin, check my post in this thread for some info about that. And this ride report thread has some related poop, plus pics as well. The little Sherpa has proven to be a durable, reliable and great running little bike.
Besides the seat height consideration, whatever you do, make sure it has electric start. Nothing more discuraging for a newbie DS rider than having a hard time starting the thing... trust me on this. GL!
Thanks again for the info everybody. Arch - nice job on the ride report. Yer a lucky guy. Now I know what to look for, all I have to do is find someone who want to sell as bad as I want to buy. :): Kevin 2TD
