We get nothing here in Canada. Zilch, zero, nadda. The US gets a 22 minute highlight reel on NBC Sports...

And I agree, ES has been dismal this year... They are basically just showing the piece the ASO cuts together, with the occasional interview of their own thrown in. Underwhelming to say the least...

2002 XR650R : Tuning the power delivery to the particular course, terrain and even weather is most often a matter of swapping exhaust systems. Campbell prefers a Bassani for terrain that demands linear delivery while he turns to a Pro Circuit for more grunt off the bottom. The additional power enables Campbell to run taller gearing, with the 15/47 sprockets from Renthal allowing an honest 110 mile-per-hour top speed (standard gearing is 14/48). Tying the two sprockets together is the innovative and durable D.I.D. ERV-2 X-ring chain (Honda part number DID520ERV2-120L).

Thanks for the insight VRRR. These speeds sounds much more reasonable (ie in Baja trim and on a paved surface). Maybe it was on a paved section, not on dirt where the 183 top speed in Dakar was achieved...

Check sportsnet for coverage... Called off road rally racing I think. Same video footage with different announcer.

All paved sections in Dakar are speed controlled. But there are some crazy fast hard pan sections of dirt- watch out for the holes, tho!

I have at my garage one ex Dakar bike (Aprilia RXV, driver Alain Duclos 2012). Alain told me that his top speed at 2012 dakar was 178km/h. I checked the gearing and it is geared up to 203km/h 13200rev/min. I have tried some speed at hard gravel roads and it takes easily over 160km/h, thats where I must slow down to keep it on the road....

Out of interest Ned, what was the highest speed your bike achieved during a special stage? Can you recall?

    Was it anywhere near 180?

And would you ride a Dakar special at 180km/h if you had the engine?

Properties of space-time begin to change a bit at those speeds.
