Help!!! Background: I was riding into work this morning, ~30miles @70mph, in the last mile I slowed to exit off the HWY, I noticed my Battery Light, ABS Light and RPM Gauge Jumping ON and OFF! It appeared to all happen below ~3k RPM. Above 3K RPM it all runs as normal. Voltages measured at acc port (direct connected to battery via Fuse) Battery Voltage (not runnings, no acc on) = 12.8v Idle = 12.3v + abs light on @~3k RPM = 13.9v + ABS light ON, Battery Light ON and RPM Gauge jumping "on and off") Above 3K RPM = 13.9v and abs light on, Battery light OFF, RPM Gauge tracking correctly. My thoughts are Voltage Regulator. Any Ideas? Thoughts? cost to repair? Where do I go from here? Thanks
Try reading AC volts... anything more than a couple tenths could indicate a bad diode in the rectifier. Is the F1 fuse OK? When that blows funny things happen on the instrument panel.
So ~30vac and "F1" was blown! replaced F1, Now Inst display is all good... But still 30VAC??? Does this mean need a "New Rectifier"? Also do you think its safe to drive it home (30Miles) PS: Thanks Beezer and Mike54 :)
Can anyone confirm what they get in the way of VAC (volt AC) on the battery when the the bike is running???? I'm getting ~30VAC with a digital Voltmeter and ~14VDC. Thanks
Make sure it's Volts and not Millivolts (Mv). Sounds high, but it's possible because the meter sees the absolute value change.... peak to peak on an unregulated source. 30Mv is normal, 30 VAC is bad and means the regulator/rectifier is shot. I'd have to look at the diagram again, but what happens when F1 blows is the instruments get put into a ground path circuit that doesn't normaly exist.
