buy motorcycle with tourist Visa? be legal to cross borders

Hello everyone,

here is Teo and I have a simple question.
Can I buy a motorcycle in Canada with a Tourist visa ?
If so I will be allow to cross the borders ?
Used or new does make any differents other then price?

The documents I will have will be my passport and the international driving license and my italian license.

I was no able to see any other questions similar to this one anywhere.

I know everyone buy it in the Usa but for other reasons Im cosidering to buy it in Canada.

Yes you can buy a motorcycle in Canada being a tourist. It helps to have some one here to help you with it. Alberta seems to be the easiest province to buy and insure a bike.
I helped a biker from Belgium buy a bike last spring he rode for 3 months and then sold just before going home.

I would offer to help you but I will be riding in Europe starting the end of April on an Irish bike I bought and stored in Spain.
Hopefully some one will help you with the purchase.

Where will you fly to? Canada is a big place and each province has different regulations.

Well the cheapest tickets are for toronto and montreal, but for 100 usd more I can fly to Vancouver then in case move to Alberta from there.

Do U have any idea how long it takes to do all the paperwork ?

Yes he crossed into the US in Alaska. The bike was a used 2003 KLR. It was registered into his name and the Insurance was purchased here in Calgary. the registration( plates) took only 20 minutes and the insurance took 30 minutes, this of course was with my help. Once you have all the paper work you are perfectly legal.

I did it in BC (a bit harder than Alberta as they only allow 3 months reg at a time). I then rode into the US with BC plates, when the the registration expired I re-registered it in the US.

Two Kiwis called a dealer here and had two Yamahas plated and ready to roll across the country on the TCAT. Flew in on a Sunday and rolled out on Monday headed west with Newfoundland plates.
Which borders are you looking to cross?.

The answer to question 2 is not "No" it is "Yes" - I have done it.

I am trying to buy a bike and register in Alberta - Edmonton. Unfortunately the more I get closer to it I realize how difficult it is and its impossible.

Every insurance company is asking for alberta class 6 licence, every other insurance says NO without knowing what the are asked about.

You can register if you buy from a dealer and you have the following documents

Alberta Registry Office. We would be assuming that
the motorcycle is either new or was last registered in Alberta.

So far 20 of the insurance companies have said "one has to be a resident to get insurance" however am still in pursuit and will update if I get any insurance provider - am looking for a one year cover.

Where are you staying in Alberta? Couldn't you use that address and say you are a resident?

I can tell you that here in Ontario motorcycle insurance is becoming one huge pain in the riding muscles.
I bought my current motorcycle three years ago and my insurer told me they no longer sell motorcycle insurance and once I sold the old bike they would not insure a new one. Becky, the woman I dealt with over the phone was really obnoxious about it too.
This is an insurance company I had been dealing with for over 30 years.
A new insurance group coverage specialist was just starting up and I moved my car, motorcycle and home insurance to them. No problem.
Get a call a few weeks later from the owner of the insurance agency I used to deal with asking why I had moved. I explained the problem to him, and complained about Becky while I was it.
Turns out Becky is his daughter.

I will be staying in Edmonton. I have an address in Edmonton, my spouse is a resident and we own a house, so that address will do.

Since the registry and service Alberta have confirmed I take that as a positive sign for my purchase and I will be getting a entry level motorcycle for now - Yamaha R6
