10 days with a tent and a thumper...or...

Frost, Freaks, Food and Fun..

Will an old guy and bike survive the Scrub & Kamp Kraut....again......

Day 1 of 10 Friday 2-29-08 7am est

Is it really a good idea to hop on an old thumper with a home-made ignition and a 3rd gear problem and head for Bike Week....500 miles away?

I see the DR just won't die, gotta love a tough bike.

I hope you are planning on staying for the whole week next year, too....

Hmmmmmm.......I seem to remember someone saying something like that last year.



Billy gets a free pass this time since he broke his leg.

It's already been established that it's cold and I'm old for those reasons I didn't pre-fuel the bike so I'd be forced to stop early and warm up.

It was a good thing too as I needed a newspaper to stuff into my jacket for some extra wind protection.:eek1 Not much of a windsheild on the old DR650 and no electrics for me.

I took a different route for a change of scenery this year.


The South Carolina portion must have shared some of Shog's old "ride to work" route as I'm sure I recognized several scenes from that thread.

Although that may have done something to warm the soul....it didn't do a !%$#&*@ thing for my feet!!


It wasn't too long and I was in Georgia with the sunshine warming me up.

I was looking forward to lunch and Mark1305 had recommended a BBQ place in Waycross.

It was not to be:ddog

I decided to just grab a snack and try to make it to the Scrub before sunset, as I knew they would have the grill fired up.:dg

Is this some kind of new alternative fuel?



I made it!!!


The mileage was just a tick below 500



1 down 9 to go.....so far so good!

I managed to get my new tent pitched last night (red one on left) and wasn't even close to being the first one up this morning.


Some were hard at work prepping food for the nights feast.

It's good to have a camp mascot.... this little girl rode down from Atlanta in Tony's jacket.



This edition of the Scrub had a bunch of losers on street bikes attending.

I did, however, manage to find 3 others that wanted to ride some sand Saturday am.

We started out with some harder packed jeep trails before lunch.


Then progressed to some looser sand in the afternoon. Where we found this nice little dinette set out in the middle nowhere.


It made a nice spot to take a break....notice the handicapped potty stool under the table too.


Graham tried to show us how to roost with that 525..........keep working on it there buddy.

Back at the Scrub.....

El Pecan highjacked JD's 4 wheeler....for no apparent reason.


A crowd was beginning to gather......and the lake was looking good....yep, I jumped in...and it felt good!

JD had the ribs smoking and smelling great!!

That was followed by sunset and more song and dance....and lots more "wildlife"

I've heard it said with my own ears......"what happens at the Scrub........."

I will say....... that I laughed and laughed till I almost cried!!

If Saturday wasn't just about a perfect day........I basically repeated it all over again on Sunday!

mark1305 cooked up some killer boudin (sp) for breakfast. That and a few cups of coffee, then it was back out into the Ocala National Forest.

This time Scribe and sanjoh joined Graham and I, both of them on XR650Rs. In fact, BeefJerky had borrowed sanjoh's on Saturday while they were off on a Street ride.


We came upon a few obstructions....

If that was the worst fall of the whole weekend....I think we did pretty good!!

After we got back to camp that afternoon I decided to change oil in the old DR and see how much metal was stuck the magnetic drain plug.

It didn't look too bad.

The crowd did thin out some as I expect some people may actually go to work on Mondays.


Those of us that stayed laughed even harder around the campfire than we did the night before.

I wish I had a camera that could have captured the sky that night. It was clearer than I can remember seeing it in a long time, it looked almost close enough to touch!!

If you've ever been to the Scrub you know that the driveway alone can provide plenty of entertainment.

Good stuff there Kevin. I never found any one to ride out in the woods with but I did get to pop and egg yoke across the table at the IHOP.

Laugh and Laugh and then Laugh until it hurt.

I cried real tears.

wow, what an impressive display of riding skill . Those GS's sure do look cool though .
