The topbox is a 40, though I wonder if there was a taller one, mine won't accept a helmet which would be nice. The side cases are 35s. I took them w/o the topbox on this trip just to see what living on 70 liters for a few days was like. Other than adding a tent, sleeping bag, and pad - I could pretty easily travel for months with them, so the topbox will make things more cushy. The right side of my cheapo Givi rack sticks out a bit... I measured the distance from the outside edge of both side cases and came up with 38", so I don't really care that they're off center, which was unnoticeable when riding. I even put more of the weight in each one trying to throw off the balance, but again I didn't notice bupkis. The rack is Givi PLR6401 and my sole reason for buying it was cost: $113.84, a little more than half what I'm seeing them for now. I bought from http://www.cli-maxridinggear.com/servlet/StoreFront though they're $190 now, most stores have them @ $200+ For the most part the Tiger/Givi/Caribou combo works ok. Caribou built their cases to work with the rack, not knowing what bike the rack would be installed on. So the lock on the left side box really has to be worked to get it on or off, especially with the topbox on. This is due to the top side of the lock hitting the grab rail as you turn it. But I can live with this.
I am 5' 11" with 34 " in seam. Tried the Triumph Tall windscreen at the high position today. The buffeting was horrendously bad, even worse than the stock screen. I have adjusted it to the very low and give it a try in the evening. But looks like I will need to go on a different route to find a solution for the wind noise/buffeting.
Anyone have a Triumph Adjustable High Screen Kit? HERE I'm looking for something that will cut down the noise and wind blast a bit. Do not want the much more expensive Madstat (sp?) and others, although they probably do work well. I like the looks of the one in the link, but I'm not sure if it will do much to cut down noise and blast. Pictues would be appreciated, along with a comparison in the size of the stock 'screen and the Adjustable High Screen. I'm 6', 33 inch inseam. BIke has top and side cases, Givi tank bag. Thanks.
There are several owners of that shield on here. Some have liked and others have gotten rid of it. It's like seats, depends on the person.
Heck, I think it's much worse than seats! Right now that one (OEM Adj Tall screen) and the Givi 6401 look like the most attractive to ME. I'm trying to figure out how tall the Triimph on is.....looks a LOT shorter than the Givi.
I'm on my 3rd version of wind screens. All the others I've had others have loved. So many factors which include... helmet, rider height, etc. Madstad is probably the fan favorite. I'm back to the stock screen.
I have the Triumph adjustable high screen. I snapped a couple lousy pics before running out the door before work this morning. I'm pretty much your size, 6', 34" inseam. Little background, I sold my Honda CBF1000 and bought the Tiger 800XC for a couple reasons, but the main reason for getting rid of the CBF was the bloody wind noise. I loved that bike but spent a couple years trying to resolve the wind noise on it. I ended up running a CalSci med screen which was a huge improvement but still loud. I'm not overly sensitive to wind noise but the CBF was horrible. I love riding my DR650 or the Scrambler I had for the nice clean, quiet ride with no screen at all. The Tiger stock screen wasn't bad and I could have just lived with it, and it was no where near as loud as the CBF was, even with CalSci screen. I just wanted to try the adjustable one and it's stayed on. I leave it in the high upright position for long highway rides, and lower it for slower or twistier sections. I was trying to hold the stock screen up with one hand while taking the pic so these aren't perfectly lined up etc. Check the specs but I'd say the high screen is 1.5 - 2" higher than stock. High screen from the front Highest position lowest position Bottom line is it works OK for me and I'll leave it on. My acid test on my CBF for testing different shields/configurations etc. would be to stand on the pegs. You get the nice quiet clean air, then sit down in my regular riding position and try to make a mental note of the wind noise. Ride / repeat. Good luck, I know how wind noise can ruin an otherwise brilliant bike.
I just put the factory tall adjustable screen on my Tiger and with 3 small trips to work, I figured out that the lowest setting works the best for me at 5'10" and a 30" inseam. I've only tried it at the tallest adjustment, middle, and then the lowest. I am going to start adjusting it one click at a time from the lowest setting to see what it does. At the tallest setting, the buffeting was pretty bad.
Street Triple R, the wife's. She prefers to ride naked. I got tired of her telling me to sell that POS Honda and buy a real bike, meaning a Triumph.
Thats awsome. Damn fine bike. If I had a second bike for around town jaunts and twisties, that would be the one. I loved my Sprint ST but she was a bit of a big in the twisties.
Thanks fbj. The only thing I have left to do is replace the OEM trun signals. I know the wife is ready it to be finished.
Was your's the fixed http://www.sporttour.com/shopexd.asp?id=3276 or the adjustable AF6401? I hate Givi's model numbers! :huh I'm trying to keep the cost of the screen under $200 if at all possible. A Madstad is outside the budget, and I can't get used to its looks anyway. Very functional I'm sure, but it has features I don't think I need. I actually do pretty well with the stock 800 screen.....I'd just like a little less noise, and a little more wind protection for bad weather. Heck, I can ride the BMW in a rain storm and hardly get wet! I think the most pressing need I have is for less noise on the Triumph. I like the looks of the http://store.proitalia.com/triumph-tiger-800-800xc-adjustable-high-screen-kit-p- 159857.htm, and I REALLY appreaciate the pictures the other fellow was kind enough to take for me! If I knew his name and address I'd send him a Thank You card! But I'm just not sure the 1.5 - 2 inches of extra height would do much for keeping the weather or me, or decreasing the wind. Both Givi models above appear to be at least a couple of inches taller....but I would like something adjustable.......I've learned with my RT's there is no perfect screen height for all speeds.....need to pick your best setting for your target speed and either lock it there, or have an adjustable screen you can adjust on the fly.....which I think the adjustable Givi has, and the Triumph (above) maybe not?
Man, I really appreciate you taking the time to take those excellent photos and help me out! Like you I find the stock 800 screen not too bad, but less noise and more weather protection would be nice. I've taken a couple of trips with the Tiger and it is more fatiguing at day's end than the super comfortable BMW RT. I wear ear plugs on all bikes, and at all speeds. Sounds like the Triumph Adjustable High Screen decreases the wind noise a bit? Have you ridden both screens in the rain to be able to judge any difference? Thanks again for the help with the photos - is is very much appreciated!
I've had both. The adjustable Givi worked until I started wearing my new Arai XD4. The fixed Givi had terrible buffeting with every helmet I tried. I love that helmet so much that I got rid of the screen rather than the helmet. I have no pics of the fixed Givi. It was only on for a few days. There is a guy that's been traveling around South America on a Tiger for some time now. (I think its this guy http://www.realizatuaventura.com/) I noticed he is running the fixed Givi. If I had any advice about windscreen it would be to bite the bullet and spend a little extra. Pretty sure I could have bought 2 Madstads by now.
I sold my R1200RT because it too well protected, felt like riding in a Buick, with the windows rolled up. Sorry haven't ridden in the rain much, one of the down sides of living in a desert. On our fall ride down the Oregon coast we had very windy days and Jodie was getting beat up pretty bad on her totally naked Street Triple, while I knew it was windy, it wasn't bothersome on the Tiger with the screen raised. She's now looking for a Sport Tourer with some protection for longer rides.
