Hey, I am wondering how long does the R1200GS motor will run for. I am doing +/- 40000 kms (25000 miles) per year. It is not crazy, but I want to keep the bike forever, so I want to know you experience on what goes wrong and when? In addition, I want to know how long does this engine goes for?
I don't have enough BMW miles under my belt/ass to answer your question, but I do wonder if you will be changing your name when you get another flat someday?
2 Flats is because I got both flats in my first 2 trips = 4 flats. My count is 11 flats in the past year!
I've got 7,000 miles on mine. I've heard of some BMW Boxers with over 500k on the clock. The Boxer is one of the more durable motors on the market.
As of today I have 34K miles on mine. The usual tranny seals under warranty, but not much else. I am in the middle of a 3500 mile ride, and have lost my second low beam, but otherwise, knock on wood, not much else. Jim
I have 32.5K on my '05 (bought used). I just took it in for a service & to get (what I think are) the rear seals replaced under warranty. So far I've gon thru 4 low beam bulbs and 1 parking bulb. Unless I get bored and something shinier strikes my eye, I plan to keep this one for a while....
34,600 here. Runs great, gone through about 4 low beams and had a FD seal replaced under warr. a few weeks ago while on a trip. Nothing I would consider a major problem.
Hi, 33K on my early production 2005(second owner),FD went out at 31.5K,replaced under warranty. No other major issues. JR356
Dolly has 38K and some change (early 2005). Runs super all the time. At about 33K she hiccuped and started getting right at 48 mpg. Had the front rotors replaced at about 12K under warranty due to warpage. Replaced one low beam and one tail light. She just gets better and better every time I tickle her starter button! Mr. King
22,604 miles on my 2007 12GS Adv (only had it since February) and nothing so far has gone wrong (I know, I just cursed myself). Had regular services and that's it. Apart from general consumables like brake pads, front discs and tyres, I haven't had to replace or repair anything on it........... and I've dropped it twice on the road too (at nearly 0mph)
31,000 miles in three years. No engine issues. So far it seems to run better and better as the miles roll up. BRF
I don't see any reason why the oilhead can't go well over 100K, and then maybe the timing chains will have to be looked at. CHP 1100 and 1150 bikes get a lot of heat and miles on them. If the odo reads 60K, you can assume there is another 40K miles of wear on the motor from idling during traffic enforcement. From what the motor cops tell me there is nothing wrong with their motors. Other things have happened, all of which you've read about on this forum. But the motor? Nope. I don' see a reason why the 1200 should be any less reliable.
60,000 on a R1150GS motor, I think it just got broke in, stronger than ever... Some of my friends have over 300,000 before a top end rebuild was even considered... I can't see the Hexhead being too different...?
I'll be the one to rain on the parade. 22,000 miles. Brakes have gone out twice due to ABS failure. Could happen today, tomorrow or never again. I don't trust the brakes on this bike, and, am considering trading in. Great bike, and, I'm very happy with it, but, no brakes is no good. Maybe, I got a lemon. Folks are ecstatic with the bike. I believe mine is "unique".
41.5 k miles on my 05, not much to complain about. Early production, front rotor TSB to reduce chatter, a s/w upgrade for occasional wonky starting, and a seal in the FD that leaked a few drops only while riding. Except for a kaoko throttle lock and Jesse topcase the bike is stock, still has the original battery. Shocks are pretty worn. Cast wheels are almost ding free except for slight one on the front from hitting a pothole at 70 mph. Survived my attempt to kill it with only $5k estimate. Oh yeah, the tach bezel was scratched when i got it, replaced under warranty. My best mileage a few days ago, 270 miles out of a tank, 5.7 gallons to refill. 47 mpg goofing around the hill country.
My 07 has 825 as of this AM (not even a long day for some people) Sad part? I picked it up 03/03. Not enough time to ride, but she sure looks good in the garage.
