Why won't my Garmin GPS V acquire satellites?

It just won't acquire at all anymore. It does everything else, all the screens and menus work. no satellites... grrrr..

I took off the antenna to look and the connector looks fine.

    Any ideas?

Did you try updating the software on the unit? That would be the first thing to try.

If updating doesn't do any good, the next step would be to open up the case to see if something is disconnected inside. Just remove the antenna nut, take out the screws, and gently pry the case halves apart. Not that difficult, and may be an easy fix.

Try turning it on while holding the power button and the "zoom out" button simultaneously - this is supposed to do a "cold-boot" of the unit - I had to do this in the past a few times when it wouldn't acquire the satellites upon boot-up.

Because it is a "cold-boot", it will take longer to obtain a 3-D fix since it's starting from scratch...hth

Agree that you should be running the latest firmware (ver 2.60, Oct 30,2008). Might consider a hard reset, unfortunately I don't remember how.

I have seen the antenna fail internally with no outwardly visible signs.

I don't think so, but it's been years since I've owned a V. But even if it does, is that too high a price to pay if it fixes it? And if it doesn't work right now, what good do the settings do?
