First I give credit to the 28 minute oil change - this was my baseline. I really only modified a few things and used a cool oil funnel I found at KRAGEN AUTO. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=644620 I use a few different parts - namely a flexible funnel that really keeps the mess down to a spoon full or two whilst draining the tricky main hidden sump. I tried to take some decent photos to help as well... If this is your first time it's probably going to take you 45 minutes or so. I usually am done in about 30 minutes or so depending on how organized I am with tools. Bike: 2008 KTM 990 Adventure Oil: Motorex - I buy the one gallon version because you need 3 liters of the stuff anyway. Tools: Metric Ratchet Set 8MM /10MM /19MM 13MM wrench (for the hard to reach drain plug) Hex set Drain pan or two drain pans Rubber gloves Beer..... In this method i DO HAVE CRASH BARS and I DO NOT REMOVE THEM (unless I strip the 13MM nut ) which I did cause I used a crappy 13 MM wrench. Lesson learned - you should use the ROUND end of the 13Mm wrench to loosen the drain plug!! The crash bar re-assemble took me another 45 minutes because the damn tank doesn't line up with the bolt hole...arrghhhhh!!!! Bottle Jack and the dictionary of cuss words got me through it.:ddog Anyhoo... After the shock of paying $71 for a gallon of Motorex plus tax and Bay Bridge toll to get to San Francisco for the parts, I was ready to go. Lay down trash bags Warmed up bike: Tools Ready: Safety Third FF's... Ahh - the HOLIEST of all funnels in the world!!! A long, flexible, soft rubber funnel that stays right under the main drain. This is what saved me a ton of mess! The thing sat right under the sump with one piece of tape and all the oil hit the pan except for the stuff that got on my hands! The bike Hell why not have a box O towels? On sale at Kragen! Skid plate off New parts Again - I don't remove the tanks or crash bars. I also don't check the in-line oil screen because it has always been clean. I use a Stainless oil filter that is re-usable because if your water pump fails the oil filter won't disintegrate. I Drain 19 MM bolt - I put a towel under the left center stand foot so that the bike leans to the right getting all the oil out of that section. I cracked the dipstick lid so the oil drained faster. Check magnetic plug Not to bad - just a bit of stuff: Undo Drain Screen bolts on right hand side of bike: clean screen Replace crush washer on 19MM Replace bolt - tighten appropriate. Replace screen - Top Side up! - replace gasket - replace cover - tighten down bolts but not over tighten. Now for the fun part: Put bike back on level surface. Loosen the 13MM drain plug so that you can do the rest with your fingers. Place the sweet funnel under the drain and finger loosen the bolt until it comes off. Oil will start gushing out so be ready. Draining..... Close up - you can see how the long shape of this funnel was key in minimizing the mess. I left the drain plug in about one twist - so the oil didn't gush out and overfill the funnel. Replace 13MM drain plug with new crush washer. Remove oil filter cap - be sure washer comes out with it. Remove oil filter Replace original or clean/replace SS oil filter if you use one of those. Replace O ring. My O ring was in good shape but I still replaced it. Replace oil filter cap - tighten two bolts down but do not over torque. Wipe down your bike with rags and a bit of carb cleaner if you like. Add 2.5 Liters of oil - I measure it with a glass measuring cup. Run bike for 2-3 minutes. Check oil. Add another .3-.5 liters ( I add .3 then check levels) You don't want to overfill! Replace skid plate! Ensure dip stick is tight. Enjoy your beer...it tastes better now that you saved yourself tons of $$$$$ at the dealer! Hell, go out and buy another 12 pack of the good stuff. I know this is a silly question.... You drain oil from two places, under the sump and under the gas tank?
