Well I have a new hobby. I'm just learning to play the guitar. Its a blast. There is so much information on the internet. You can learn any chord or song you want to simply by clicking on to youtube.com. Truly amazing. I have an electric guitar starter kit and I am planning on getting an acoustic guitar real soon. All you good folks >> Teach me and us other newbies what you want or what you know about guitars?
Its tuff to be 40 and just learning to play an instrument but I'm really enjoying the challenge and having a bunch of fun!
How do you get a guitar player off your front porch? Pay him for the pizza! Seriously, good luck. Sure is easier now than it was 40 years ago when I started.
7 rules that work Rule 1 Buy a good guitar and have it setup properly with a quality active pickup fitted.. (a good guitar set up is a pleasure to play and cheaper in the long run) Rule 2 Buy a guitar tuner ...always play/ practise in tune ( need to train your ear to play in tune) Rule 3 Buy a good guitar stand and place your guitar on the stand beside your favourite seat in the house.... (you will then just pick it up and practise with out even thinking about it .) Rule 4 Get a good teacher that will inspire you and play what you like whilst giving you a good grounding in theory. (If you have an iPone or equivalent. video bits of your teacher playing to refer to during parctise) Rule 5 Find people to play with .... it's great FUN! Rule 6 Alway endeavour to play with people better than you. (you will learn a lot more and better players leave "space" to play with) Rule 7 most important..... HAVE FUN!

Keep practicing\building those callouses and look forward to getting a better guitar asap. Those "starter kit" electrics (often) pale in comparison to a fine quality piece. But they do have their place-helping one decide if they like to play or not without alot of cash. That being said I've played some damm fine sounding 100 dollar pawn shop boxes. YMMV
Thanks MAGPIE for the tips. A tuner is very important. Using that has really helped me turn the corner and get excited about playing. On top of that i can check to see If I'm actually getting the correct sound out of the chords when I practice. Another guitar player showed me that >> definately good to play with people who have experience.

I like my Fender starter kit although I plan on getting a higher quality acoustic real soon. Probably one of the Yamaha's. They have a good guitar for the price.
Guitar is a great hobby. I've been tinkering with it for 35 years. Can't really say what I do is "play" though. I don't have a musical bone in my body.
If you've got an iPhone, I'd highly recommend the Guitar Toolkit app. It has an unbelievable chord reference that allows you to strum and hear them, a metronome, and a pretty decent tuner. It's only a few dollars and it's amazing software.
Let me guess... something to do while the bike's holed up due to cold and snow, eh? Me too Late 40s and don't know a thing about reading music, so I'm starting from dead scratch. Tried to follow some of the internet/youtube stuff, and dummy/idiot books, but it was too all-over-the-place for me and I could see I was diving into immediate bad habits. Need my hand held like a 3rd grader, step-by-step DVD program "Learn & Master Guitar." Yup, that's about my speed...
I feel the same. I'm starting to think a few lessons might be worth it. Although I do enjoy the Marty Schwartz guitar lessons on youtube. This guy can play and he can teach!!
THanks for the heads up. I have a chromatic tuner somewhere, but can never find the damn thing. I know they probably aren't the greatest amps in the world, but I've seen some Line 6 amps, that have tuners built into them as well. Little 7-segment LCD that shows you the note. Nice to have something all built together.
One of the guys that works for me has invented an electric guitar that never goes out of tune. He thinks he can sell them for about $600. What do you guys think, does he have a winner?
