Moved my '92 GS into the basement over the winter to take it apart and put it back together to see how things work.

I've almost got it back together but, for the life of me, I can't find anywhere what kind of lubricant I should put back in here. Don't know what this is called but it's the gear that turns when you turn the throttle.

    Here's a pic:

Yeah, water soluble too, bad for rain.

Probably plain old white grease will work fine.

That is not a load bearing gear in any real way.
Water resistant would be nice but not needed.
Anything but white lithium should be fine. (the WL will run a little in the heat from the sun)

Probably #10 BMW stuff just to spend the $$$:rofl
That is what I would use only because I have a near full tube of it.

Any grease is probably Okay, but white lithium grease would be my guess as the "perfect" thing. A little goes a long way.

Any grease will work. I like the silicone red stuff from Lucas. Make sure to clean everything really well before greasing.

You're right, I am. Right after you posted I ran down to the local store and told the clerk I wanted some Kentucky jelly. Although the clerk really didn't understand what I wanted when I kept telling her I wanted some Kentucky jelly. Finally I showed her your post and she went into the back room and got a giant jar of Kentucky Jelly for me.

But, now that I've had all the other suggestions, and they all seem to be more knowledgeable than yours, I have a giant jar of Kentucky jelly. I tasted it and it is really, really bad. I think I'll start a thread to get suggestions about what to do with that jar of jelly.

P.S. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. :clap

Lithium doesn't run in the sun. I think it would probably be a good thing if it did since most all grease's problem in there is getting too hard and dry. I use lithium with some TriFlow squirted into it for almost 30 years now. I have had good luck with it. You will need it since I think that setup is about the biggest piece of crap on the bike. Most people's gears are WORN out and causing all kinds of slop. I like my throttle setup real tight. You can't ride smooth with a sloppy throttle! You have GOT to ride an airhead smooth unless you want to look like a football bouncing down the road! Alloy upper triple tree and a fork brace? Let's get all that slop out of your throttle first and then see how much better your bike handles! And then after we replace that worn out junk we can get rid of that BMW recommended 1mm throttle cable play. That is WAY too much!!! No wonder you feel as if you were a drunk riding a pogo stick! Let's get it set up. It all adds up!

That somehow turned into a tirade! Oops! Sorry but it is one of my pet peves (sp?)

    white lithium in mine too.

aside from that, I really dislike the clunky chunky throttle on my airheads. The gears aren't even that worn. Are there any decent upgrades or swaps available?
    Threads on this already?
More concerned with the 80G/S at present if that helps.

There exist only ONE good throttle:

    Magura 312,

There is now throttel that comes even in quality and durability.

Sadly Magura stopped the production, but Venhill in Britain does produce
this throttel as a reproduction now, the name is:

    Venhill 500.

Can't quite figure out how it would work, though.

Right. Because my 40 year old original throttle is inadequate. Bullfrog, Belray, I'll use any water proof grease. I HAVE seen the bevels worn out. I just haven't managed to do that myself yet.

Timely subject matter. My unusually stiff throttle was just too much to bear. On inspection I noticed worn, bent and misshapen teeth. The majority of the problem was the edge of the handle bar grip coming into contact with the throttle housing. I have ProGrips that do not have the inner bevel that the BMW grips have.

New throttle tube on the way, cam gear seems fine.. But ordering one of those seems quite confusing to match plates with cam gears...

This is a very special construction, BMW has made here, so unique that you can't exchange anything beside of using original BMW parts. Or switch to an Magura 312 Throttel, (Magura is also German like BMW so there should not be any problem).

That thing should have been replaced a LONG time ago! Replace the gear as well or you are wasting time and money. Compared to that, BARELY worn is worn out.

If you're replacing the throttle, now's the chance to decide between the dual throttle cable or single with splitter.

From my reading, most seem to think the dual cable setup is best, as it allows you to dump the splitter.

Just one more thing to consider, which may help improve the bike just a little.

The cost between both isn't exorbitant.
