I'm sure this is a bit of an overdone conversation, but it's time for a new lid and I've got the friends who insist on a white helmet for safety- visibility reasons. What do you think? Think it matters? The light silver I want isn't available, so white or dark silver/ titanium?
I read somewhere, other than hiviz, white is the next most noticeable color. I have a white Multitec, but I chose the color due to the heat in Florida!
I remember the first time I was following a buddy wearing a white helmet. We were going through some narrow twisty roads with heavy foliage. I was amazed how much his white noggin stuck out as I caught glimpses of him coming out of corners and bouncing over ridges. I decided that day my next helmet would be white. If you believe visibility adds safety and makes you feel better, then go white.
Maybe, partly because I don't do graphics, but I always buy white. The fact that it sticks out more than the rest is just a bonus.
I like the "noticing you notice them"! White it is then, sold on it. By the way, I'm going with the Nexx X1R1, great reviews for lightweight and large eye port....
I bought my last white helmet because the cheapest options for that model were solid Black, Red, or White. I've had black helmets in the past and wasn't interested in doing that again. Red was out of the question. And I'm too cheap to pay extra for fancy colors or graphics. So white it is
I have a new RJAY helmet and is white with some black parts , it is mostly white . We were out on a road ride a couple of weeks ago and my buddy did tell me that the helmet was more visable on the road . I think this is a safe colour and is not to loud like the hi vis helmets . Tezza.
Here's one thought that NO one has hit on .. I have had 5 helmets... 4 where black.. 1 Limegreen... The one thing I can tell you is the Limegreen one is so much cooler in the summer.... I remember roasting on trips across the country in my black helmets... But my Nolan N103 Limegreen is so much cooler ... My size is never an easy one to find so when I'm wanting a new one .. I'm always cut to what they have left.. Hence it is 90% of the time black..... I don't wear pink... But 2 yrs ago when I wanted a new one I could get my size at a great price from Extreme ... Very happy with the lighter colour in the hot sun... I was in TX this spring .. And wow !!! It was 104* in the TX Hill country that week... SO what I'm saying is got with the lighter colour...
Bloke I often ride with had a silver helmet that after a short while looked so grubby it looked like he'd pulled it out of a pig's bum. Black looks great but matt black shows every finger mark ever made. Gloss black is fine as well, but it's too hot in summer to go cooking anything on the outside of my helmet, let alone the inside. My new one that I've just ordered is white. I'm also considering getting those mesh style Y-front undies next, 'cause I'm obviously getting old now thinking like this.
Reflective tape/stickers helps a lot too. Another case of riding with a friend, the frist time I rode behind someone at night who had reflective tape on the back of his helmet I was amazed. So I put some ADV stickers on the back of my white helmet. It helps it looks less plain and boring white. It also helps a lot at night.
+1 on reflective stickers... I have a few on mine.... My mate has a silver helmet.. You can see how nice his sticker glows !!!
I notice other riders wearing white helmets, so it seems to work for me. I also put a lot of reflective tape on mine. Every safety study indicates that wearing a white helmet makes a significant difference in visibility. I find it hard to believe, but someone did a test of the temperature inside a white helmet vs. a black helmet in the sun, and there was hardly any difference. Still, a white helmet is a lot easier to pick up compared to a black one that has been sitting in the sun. I found this text below on another site. It supposedly originated at Helmet Harbor, which I understand is out of business now.
I like that tape but need to find a way to use it on my helmet that won't mess up the gorgeous paint scheme Maybe I can get the reflective gold tape and have a few laurels cut out of it.
