There is only one problem with riding in the U.P. It's that damnable bridge. Every time I go across the Mac Bridge the paved lane is always closed for, quote, "Repairs or Painting". You are forced to ride on the egg crate section. I must admit it is interesting if there is a freighter going under the bridge when you are going over it.
Used to live up there back in the nineties. Beautiful country to travel in. Would love to hear about your trip!
Started in the suburbs of Detroit and went across through Grand Rapids up the shore through Traverse City and up from there.
My thoughts eggszactly. My tire not happy on the steel grate bizness. I went down state for a day or two, and worried about having to go back over the bridge the whole time, and it kept eating at me. Sure enough, couple days later, you still had to drive on the steel grate. The front tire most dodgy on it..
Looks like a fun ride!! Looking to do the same in Oct, but coming up from WI. Do you have a map of the roads you took. My buddy and I are taking our KLR and Dakar's up, looking for dirt trails and gravel roads. I was wondering if you (or someone) could help us out. We'd be leaving from the Tomahawk area. We would like to go to the tip and back in about 3-4 days. I did cross the Macinac Bridge last week on my RT. The paved lane was open and boy was I glad. Had the wife and all the luggage with a 20+mph wind to contend with. Those egg crates looked scary. Any suggestions on camping or motels would be appreciated too. If you have a chance please contact me about maps you might have regarding the roads up der, eh!! Cheers BKWags
You should pm Cannonshot. He is a wisconsin rider who knows the up well. Google Cannonshot advrider. He has tons of ride reports.
Cannonshot's Upper Peninsula Adventure Trail is a good basis for a UP ride: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=627424 http://dco43054.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=20 With the KLR and the Dakar, you might want to take the big bike go-arounds. This is a fantastic ride.
