A netbook is definitely the way to go if its just for email and web-browsing. Ive got an Asus EEE that has held up great in just the neoprene pouch that came with it carried in my tank bag. I can live without DVD's on a bike trip, but if you can't - I stuufed mine with a 1 tb hard drive so I would mot run out of room for pictures and video taken along the way. There's enough space left over to rip a dozen DVD's to the hard drive and the netbook plays that stuff just fine.

If a netbook is switched off it will be okay for travel.

Problem with leaving the netbook between soft stuff is eventually the screen start to press on the body/keyboard until something goes or the screen get damage.

I am looking at a hard case to accommodate the netbook.
