I'm buying this from an inmate: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=669902 Build for the GF. I have talked to the owner and know what I'm getting into. Heading out tomorrow to pick it up, let the fun begin.
Emily was less than enthusiastic when I got up to go get the bike. She had to work. Bike looks like this: Plus a bunch of boxes and a Honda service manual. I got my work cut out for me.
I'm going to need to order new gaskets for the motor. I could go through a few vendors and order each one individually, but is there a resource to order a kit for the entire engine so I don't miss anything? More pics to bore your socks off are on their way!
Got the gears on the transmission main & countershafts. Having a bit of trouble aligning the shifting forks, but I'm done for today. Progress was made.
Way too cool Ken. My wife just picked up a 1985 XL350R for me to restore and her to ride ealier this month. I've found there are quite a few bits available for these bikes on fee-Bay, some NOS stuff and a lot of take-off parts. The toughest parts to find are the flame red plastics that Honda used in 1985. Chevrolet red engine paint is a very good match for the frame, BTW, though there is information for an exact match somewhere here on the interweb. I found it about a week or two ago. -Joe
Yes, she's a lot happier now. That pic was taken at 5am and she didn't have to be up until 7am. She's not a morning person.
This bike may be over 25 years old, but got pretty low miles. I think I got the 2 halves sorted, will double check tomorrow. Big thanks to ValveCrusher for excellent advice. Gonna add a few more parts and check tranny function tomorrow.
Keep moving, ballistic_ken! I'm very impressed with your progress far - she'll be riding that thing in no time.
Thanks, waiting on gaskets still.............. You did a good job keeping things organized, made everything way easier. I'm still looking for a pressure plate, but hope to be riding it in April.
Still waiting on gaskets and the pressure plate. Hopefully this bike will be up and running this month and will make it's ADV debut at ChickFest 2011. I ordered the cylinder and head gaskets too so I won't have to wait so much next step.
Got the pressure plate in the mail today. When ordering gaskets I forgot to order the oil pump gasket.
Try this guy. Haven't used him yet but have chatted with him on line. Seems to be straight up. http://www.flashredbikes.com/ Has new OEM plastics, decals and such.
