    Greetings from the USA!

I've been watching the NZ womens basketball team and realized that they all wore black, that and the NZ cycling team. I know the All Blacks play in all black (go figure) but did the country adopt black as its unofficial color? From what I remember, NZ national team came to a match with all blacks and the rest was history. Anybody care to share some culture with a fellow ADV'r.

    Angelo

PS: I hope to move to NZ once I finish school. :freaky

Pretty much. Black, with some form of fern/koru design. Although our football (soccer) team are known as "The All Whites".
Black n White. is the new errrr Black.
Interesting thing about the All Blacks, they didn't always wear that strip. Apparently they picked it up after a Rugby correspondent was misqouted saying that the team played "like all BACKS", meaning it was a fast running game, rather than forward dominated possession.
Least that is what I was told as a nipper.

Interesting! I like the fern design that they used for their warm ups.

    It's the official colour.

Thats the story I heard as well. Begs the question - what color did they wear before they became "all backs" though?

And you've only got to remember one colour... black.

I find it amusing that there is the All Blacks, the All Whites (round football), the Tall Blacks (basketball), Black Sticks (hockey), Black Ferns (netball). Repeat ad nauseum.

That's a relatively recent phenomenon - I think the second team to get a moniker was the All Whites in the 1982 World Cup, the rest followed.

We may have followed the Aussies in this, they have a name for all their teams: Wallaby's (Rugby), Kangaroos (League) Socceroos (Soccer), Olyroos (Soccer again), Boomers (Basketball) etc (it's that marsupial fetish they have). And at least we don't play in yellow...

At the very least, black looks cool! I would like to finish school and apply for a business visa, or any kind for that matter.

and proud of it! When my forefather was sentenced to transportation for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his family, his wife walked out into the street and decked the first copper she found, so she could be transported to be with him. Risky move, but it worked. They were re-united in Parramatta and granted a pardon and some land. Or so the story goes.

I'm a mix of convict and judiciary stock... work that one out.

In response to an earlier question, the first NZ international rugby team had black jerseys with brown across the shoulders, I believe.

Doubtless someone with lots of time can find a description on the Web.

The silver fern has been a national sports symbol since those early rugby days, but our international motorcycle racers have favoured a stylised kiwi, right down to John Britten's time. "Kiwis can't fly" has been around for ages....

Most teams dont do Haka - pretty much high school first XV's are the only other rugby teams that do Haka.
