Haha. It used to be that you should only use leaded to clean your chain as lead is a known lubricant. It was introduced into petrol as both a lubricant and knock suppressor.

However, many believe that 98 will do the same whereas it has little or no lubricating properties. The same applies to 95 and 91 octanes although 91 is still the preferred octane for air filter cleaning and it can be bought relatively cheap with a shopping docket

Kerosene, rinse off with fresh water from inside out, soak and squeeze in warm soapy water, rinse out with fresh water again. Hang up to dry. Massage Motul filter oil though and squeeze out excess. Apply grease to sealing surface. re-install and let set overnight.

Any one ever done the wash cycle in the washing machine with the air filters.....? No Toil claims it's friendly? High doubts on this for me . I'd be paying for a new washer for the little lady. Tried and true gas ..hot soapy water ....clean water squeeze out gently ..air dry and if it's air early morning oops forgot? I'll strap it to a fan for a hi speed dry.oil generously into a plastic bag and smoosh around until it's even coat add more if necessary repeat....same as below posted. ...moose oil seems too snotty. Bel rays works just fine ....Grease the seal....river crossings will bite.

I wash foam filters in Dawn dishwashing detergent, dry 'em in the sun, apply 30W oil, wring out the excess, install and go. It's the oil that does the work, the foam is merely a media to hold the droplets of oil which capture dust.

Which is why it pays to use filter oil which sticks to the foam, rather than motor or gearbox oil which will eventually make its way to the bottom of the air box under the force of gravity.

In my experience the gear oil works best on stock filters as the aftermarket ones have a corser foam which causes the the gear oil to run down to the bottom and not stay at the top

Put on a pair of nitrile treatment gloves (and clear safety glasses) pour a small amount of belray onto the outside of the filter then gently work the oil into the foam with the finger tips watching the inside of the filter to ensure it comes up consistently blue and work your way round. Once finished throw the gloves away.
Never had oil from the filter in my housing yet - just don't mention the PO overfilling the latest bike in the shed and me picking it up riding home 700k :eek1
Filter foam was dripping by the time I got 100k up the road.

Sounds like a translation from a Chinese service manual.:lol3

As for the air filters disintegrating, They all do that. What you wash them in will depend on how quick. Even the oils will break them down.
