Wanted to post a heads-up to my fellow hackers. Just started a thread in Trip Planning about running the CDT in August. Looking maybe for some partners for the whole thing or just segments. Thread link HERE Post up replies or questions over in that other thread. I've got Elmer to thank for putting the idea in my head. Cheers !!
Hi Drone....threw in a few more CDT collections of mine in your "Trip Planning". Hope to encourage the CDT Hack naives, to give it a GO! cheers...
Drone Are your navigation skills equal to your info gathering and organizing skills ? What does one need to get the dog into Canada ? Updated shot records ? Your timings not right for me but I've had bigger problems.DB
I WAS planning to do the whole CDT the second half of Aug this year on my GS (2 wheels). Now it looks like about 3-4 of us will be doing the CO BDR instead...and I have an overwhelming urge to trade my R12GS for a new Ural GU. BTW, I think it was Elmer that said there'a a place or two on the CDT that a hack can't fit thru...need to be sure about what section(s) so as not to need to turn back. One place was a pair of posts intended to keep wider vehicles off the trail.
I have this weird "sense of place" (that's what I call it). I discovered it way back when I was a boy scout. Anyway, what it is, is I almost 100% of the time have an innate knowledge of where I am on the planet. In fact, occasionally I'll have a "moment" when I lose my sense of place and it's quite disconcerting--until I regain my bearings. I carried a compass with me into the backcountry when I used to do a lot of off-trail bushwacking. (Out here in the Northwest, we call it "scrambling" but it's basically hiking off-trail.) Anyway, after years of never using the compass I stopped carrying it anymore. When I went on group outings with the Mountaineers Club I used to just sit back and smile as other members of the group discussed routes etc. because so many of them had absolutely no idea of where they were. But not to appear like more of an asshole than I already am, I would generally just go along with the group unless they were making a serious mistake. And then I would tell them which way to go. :d When following a road, I never get lost, per se. Rather, sometimes I'll stop and look around and say to myself, "This isn't where I expected this road to go!" and then I'll have to revise my route. But never lost. I know--weird. About the dog--all you need is a rabies certificate. Nice thing about not being on a timetable is any time I hit a bottleneck, I can just turn around and go another way. I'm just a guy going for a ride. Makes no difference if I go this way or that way.

Will you guys please stop if his head gets any bigger he'll need a new helmet !!!!!!!!! He already thinks he's a mystic or in another life John Dunbar, but I'm worried he's Flannery O'Connor's Hazel Motes from Wise Blood.
Big--how'd you know about John Dunbar??? :huh Did I tell you about that? Stands With Fist is pissed now.
Ok Hazel everything you post is public info and I was trying to learn about tires and wheels, Where would I have seen that ? Hmmmmm! So have you had allot of PM with inmates wanting in on Ned's Excellent Adv ? DB
Damn I'm surprised, it's early of course but maybe its just my perception but your kind of everybody's favorite boy scout, I'd like to go on this adventure but I'm not a real camper but am a quick study, and there's no time like the present to get started. The sidecar business is something I've always wanted to try, am having issues with worn out shoulders and heavy steering, the Stroker front wheel has helped a bunch.Haven't been on a real over the road moto trip since about 86 I was riding a new K100rs at the time. Even spent a little time in Tacoma with friends from Ft Lewis on a SP1 Guzzi the year Mt St Helen blew. My fantasy was always a sailboat in the San Juans, south Pacific in the winter. Onward and forward,I'l figure out what I'm going to do.DB Tatonka's New Shoes ! John
Howdy DRONE, I am giving this some serious thought, I got nothing better to do and I think "Gertrude" would be capable of doing this ride.
One month bump to get this back to page 1 for the hackistas that missed it last month. The main sign-up and discussion thread is over in Trip Planning - HERE. Enjoy life! See the Rockies! Just think how yer gonna feel when you get to this sign-- Happy? Sad? Fulfilled? Empowered? Relieved? Proud? Only way to know is to join in!
Awesome to hear other hackers are going for the CDT! I am doing this ride with my dog and two other inmates on DRZ's in July. I've got tons of tracks I've been working off to build our route. There are several areas with "neck-down" gates you will need to look out for. They limit vehicles to 48" wide.
