    Great pics!

    Will look those places up.

I will take my Garmin Montana that has the http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ South Africa maps! Hope they are good enough!
Will also take my iPad. You think it's worth getting a prepaid sim card for mobile Internet?

    in Joburg, yes.

you might not have full 3g coverage in the mountains, but it always helps just having a backup plan.

mobile data is pretty cheap i think.

Sim cards are free, just register with passport. Then buy mobile data from a supplier. You should be able to get about 3gb for around $US 50 (400ZAR)

You won't see any wild animals along this route unless you check into a wildlife park...

Hi there fellow adv's on the other side of the indian ocean. Just checking some pics there that steveo posted, postcard material. Unfortunately, we arnt that lucky over here with more arid country than anything, especially in the west, but we do have squillions of kilometers of tracks though. Most of the time when a few us go for 2 or 3 day venture somebody always writes up a ride report with pics and stories to give anyone who is thinking of doing something similar an idea of what to expect. Is there a thread or sticky that you guys have on something like this, or even just photos.

    Cheers,
    Nick

Well that depends really on whether you prefer driving a diesel guzzeling 4x4 or riding a bike? Also how green you are?

Last time I looked you could rent a bike for R990 per day and a 4x4 Landy for about R1450 per day. So who is actually insane?

Me I'd pick the bike any day!

Hey guys, don't know if I should post my query here or start a new thread. I'll try here first:

I'm riding on a DR650 and will be coming to ZA around end of September from Mozambique; currently in Kenya.

Need some border crossing advice: is there only the one main crossing at Komatiepoort, coming from Maputo or can I cross north of Kruger, near the Zim, Moz, ZA border? Google Maps shows a road there, but it goes thru Limpopo NP in Moz and the north end of Kruger, so not sure if bikes are allowed. Anybody done it?

Should I just stick to the main crossing since I'll be entering SACU who are known to be sticklers about the carnet?

The north crossing goes across the Kruger, you are not allowed on a bike, you may be lucky and get someone to put your bike on a backie or small truck across:1drink

    Hey Jammin,

You might be in Johannesburg in time (27 Sept. 2012) for the "Volcano Run". Your DR650 would be a good choice.

See Volcano Run under "Trip Planning".

    Cheers.

Due to circumstances, and some unanticipated events the Volcano Ride has been postponed to Thursday 25th October 2012. (See Volcano Run under Trip Planning).

All other details remain the same.

    Thanks.
