I had an SP500 for a time, not sure if that counts or not ... here's a page I posted up a few years ago, with some pics. Figured I'd share, just because it was such a gorgeous machine - hope it still is. PLEASE NOTE this is a very old page and THE BIKE HAS BEEN SOLD FOR YEARS. Also note that email address doesn't work any more. http://hawkfan4life.com/SP500/SP500.html Robb
that is a sweet big sp i had a 79 xl500 way back i was looking for a sp500 when picked up my 91 dr650 but if i come across an sp500 for the right price who knows
Hey I drove one from Sandiego to Alaska and back and have owned 3 or 4 since. Great bike just watch your regulator and stator. I have a buddy that has 80,000 miles on his and the only thing he has ever done is the clutch. Does not wheelie very well, but i am gonna try a tm40 carb on mine soon. I will throw some pics up when i get a chance. Brian
I have a DR600 which from what I have seen they are the same Australia calls them DR and other countries call them a SP.:huh I have put a TM40 carb on mine you will have to watch the accelerator pump because it comes on very strong and floods the bike mine comes on at abou 1/4 throttle and shuts off abit after 3/4 throttle. Makes a huge differance to performance , Also you will have to remove the air box cover tried to start mine with it on and she just would not have a bar of it, remove it and she fires first go.
i knew there were some sp/dr600 folks out there i had an sp200 for a while and always wanted the big 6
Thanks for the heads up!!! I cant explain why i have a thing for the sp. It must have something to do with that 5 gallon gas tank. What shock are you running on yours??? mine is getting a bit soft in the ass. i am just about ready to go buy a 99 frame and swinger and transplant all my stuff onto it. I keep locking the real wheel into the fender every time i jump it on a hill above 2 feet. brian
Here is a pretty neat site for a shop for those who like big trailies. I have been wanting one of those dr750/800 bigs for a while, but shipping is insane(around 1200) http://www.fctrott.co.uk/trailbikes/
I have just bought the front end off a 95 dr650 so hopefully I will fit the without to many hassles I will setup a diary as I do it.It will be nice to have a front end that wont leak and a larger brake to pull the big girl up . One of the other mods that I wont to do is replace the stock steel tank with a acerbis 25 litre plastic tank, hopefully that works:huh As for rear shock not sure what kind to replace it with/ not sure what will fit if anyone has any ideas. I have already done the complete exhaust system to match the carbie and was thinking a cam kit and a 630 kit, Has anyone done this? if so what to watch for? As for owning one I like old school power, Thats all there is to it!
Sad thing is I bought one brand new in 1985. Even sader is I still own it. I liked the bike and rode it alot. I know there were people riding Street and Trail bikes (Dual Sports) back then but we never saw any. People felt sorry for us because of the bike's we were on. You couldnt explain it to them so we quit trying. When they rode off on the blacktop we hit the back roads. I put over 30,000 miles on the bike and it still runs and looks pretty good. Now my son rides it and I have a 09 DR. I had a TS185 an XL 250 then XL500 then SP600 now a DR650. Never will forget the time in 1986 we were in the middle of (Nowhere) Eastern Kentucky going through a stream crossing when an old single axle dump truck came up on the other side and waited for us to cross. We made it over, and out on the running board stepped a HOT 20 year old filly in a Bikini and asked us if we were lost? Well yes we were No GPS,Maps. You know it took at least an hour to explain to us how to get out of there. :))) The stuff that dreams are made of. I will see if I can round up some old pics if you want.
this is great i had a feeling that some one out there owned an sp/dr600 check the rear shoes some times they wearout and start to lock and knock the cam out od the brum and grease or never seize it any pictures of that gal?
